MAGISTRATE'S COURT
4 POLICE CASES A MOTOR COLLISION Mr. L. G. .Rcid, S.M., presided at tlic Court yesterday. Linda Catherine O'Connor, William Hutchison. Cardno, Langi Joseph's, and Joseph-.. Thomas Barrett,, charged with insobriety, were fined os., in default hours' imprisonment in each case. Andrew Williamson, a prohibited person, was iincd 10s., with the option of three days' imprisonment. fiertha Ogden, charged with being a rogue and a vagabond, and with having insufficient lawful means of support, was further remanded to August 22, as she is still under medical treatment.
James Bently Kemp was charged that being a bankrupt he did at Auckland on iebruary 10, 1916, contract debts with tiilmore and Co. for £12 15s. 3d. when he could not have had any reasonable or probable expectation of being able to pay the same. He was remanded to appear at Auckland on August 17. Bail was allowed in £25 and one surety of £25. Mr. G. G. Watson appeared for accused. MAINTENANCE. Mr. E. M. Beeoliey appeared for Mrs, Hawthorn,- who applied for maintenance against her linsband, James Hawthorn, a soldier in the Thirteenth Reinforcement. The evidence showed that Hawthorn had assigned 4s. a day. of his pay to another woman, who, it was _alleged, passed as his wife. The Magistrate made an order giving Mrs. Hawthorn '4s. a day. ' JUVENILE COURT. In the Juvenile Court, a youth charged with the theft of postal notes was remanded to Tuesday next. A remand was also granted to the same date in respect of a lad ten years of age, who is alleged to have run away from his home in Greymouth, and was found in a street in the City at 2 o'clock yesterday morning. ■ CLAIM FOR DAMAGES. Mr. L. G. Reid, S.M., was engagod tho whole of the afternoon in hearing a oivil action, W. H. Trengrove, Courtcnay Place, motorigarage proprietor, v. I'at-rick Cavanagh, dairyman. Mr. 11. Hill appeared for the plaint-ill', and Mr. .Sladdeii for tho defendant-. The plaintiif's claim was that on April G, while travelling from Trentham to Wellington in his motor-car, which con. tained passengers, the car collided with cattle, the property of tho defendant, and which were allegedly straying on the public road near Kaiwarra, the car being fcousiderably damaged. Tho plaintiff in no way contributed to tho accident,. Ho therefore claimed tho sum of £35, costs of repairing tbe damage, and: £15. as general damages. The defendant entered a counterclaim for £22 ( 105. for the loss of a cow which it was alleged was due to tho unskilful driving of the car by the plaintiff. ■ , His Worship gave judgment for pkiin. tiff for £20, and costs £4 7s. Defendant was non-suited on his counter claim. JUDGMENT BY DEFAULT. John William Jobson, £4 16s. 6d., 10s.; J. B. Clarkson and Co., Ltd., v. B. G. Emory, 135., costs only. ;/ judgment SUMMONSES. Judgment summons cases were dealt with as follow; — 1 11. Lewis was ordered to pay Jack Jacobus the sunt of £3 10s., on or bofore August 29, in default three days' imprisonment, and William Page.was ordered to pay William Trevor Gnlliver tho sum of £1 145., on or before the same date, default being fixed at 24 hours' imprisonment. John Hall Flockton secured judgment against Michael Laracy for £4, a warrant for possession of tenement to bo issued on August 30. ALLEGED BREACH OF CONTRACT. Ivo S. Joyce brought an action against Siiuon Edilson to recover £100 for alleged breach of contract in nonacceptance of a consignment of fruit. The defendant colter-claimed for £50 for breach of warranty. Mr. P. H. Putnam appeared for the plaintifl, and Mr. D., Jackson for tho defendant. The hearing of the,ease occupied the C-onrl nearly the whole r of tlia day, ami the further hearing was adjourned to Wednesday, August 23.
