Then she wis tilled up with eemont and dspatchcd by tho Admiralty to a port "somcwhoro across the Channel," where she is now lying fathoms deep in the bottom of an enemy harbour mouth.
RIVEIUNA'S REST RUN., For some timo past the IJuddart-Parkor steamer Riverina hag been putting up some good runs across tho Tasraan Sea, her best being accomplished on arrival here fora .Sydney yesterday morning. Tho • vessel left Syduev at 430 p.m. on. Fridfw, and, after experiencing (rood -weather, arrived in port- at 6.45 a.m. yesterday. Her actual steaming time was 3 days 123 I hours, which is said to be the best fjorforuiance put up by any boat between Sydney and Wellington for some time. Tho Riverina brought^transhipments ex the following vessels:—Cooma, . Durham, Boorara, Houtman. St. Albans, Port Elliot. Gubo. Zcalandia, Floridian, Niagara, Nikko lla.ru, Tenno Maru, Yen* tura, Kiiul Tango Maru. \ The Riveriho will not po on to Lytteltou as usual this trip, but will remain at Wellington till to-morrow, when de-pa-rture will be taken for Sydney direct : and Hobart at 5 p.m. MONOWAI HUNTING LATE. On account of having met bad weather on the East Coast tho Monowai was late in arriving from Auckland, via way ports, last evening. In consequence, her departure for Lyttelton. and "Dunedin "has been postponed till 6 -p.m. to-day. Cargo for the ports mentioned wll be taken in till 10.30 a.m. to-day, but the vessel will take uo passengers. • HUDDART, PARKER'S NEW STEAMER. Huddart, Parker and Co.'s local office has been advised that thoir new steamer Nairana, wheh is being built at Dumbar. ton, has been in an almost completed condition for some timo, but owing to all the available shipbuilding labour being, nequirefd for olheV purposes her completion has been indefinitely postponed. It is stated that the completion would take only two montlfs to accomplish. STUDY 'OF OCEAN QUERENTS., Sub-Lieutenant T. Konishi 1 , H.I.J.M.S. Azuma, i& makag a study of ocean cur« rents, and has decided to drop bottles at intervals while at sea containing requests that they be sent by the fenders to the various meteorological offices. Mr D. 0. Bates has just received the following note, with blanks filled in by the finder:—
"This bottle was dropped to know ocean currents. I shall he much obliged to you if you will fill,up the fojlovring blanks and send this note to the Meteorological Office at Wellington, New .Zealand. I, a student of oceanography, ask your kindness for the eako of seiencc.-<Sub-Lieutcn-ant T. Ivonishi, H.I.J.M.S. Azuma. This bottle was dropped in lat. 39deg., 19min. sseo. S. long. 178deg., 15mm. E., i.e., Port, land Island light bears vS. SOdeg., W. 17 miles (mag. bearing), July 7, 5.30 p.m., 1916." The bottle was picked up at Oraka, mouth of Kopuawhara Greek, inner end of Mahia. Peninsula, on August 8. by Mr, Hatarei I'eko, Opoutama, 1T.8., and was bottle No. 1. Mr. Bates says that t-ho travel of the bottle shows that the current was from the south. In the lower corner of | the note Sub-Lieutenant Koninhi wrote "God bless tills bottle, a student of current," and asked Mr, B«tW to tell him the result. » MESS-TABBLE GOSSIP. Captain W. Nicholas has resumed charge of the Opawa, in place of Captain Vendore. Captain D. J. Watson, formerly secretary of the Merchant Service Guild, is now master of the steamer Carina. A letter received from him at a French port states that he is "all well." Mr. H. A. Daniel, chiof officer of t,ho Monna, having come asljore, Mr. Diusmorc, late chief of the Mouowfli, lias filled the vacancy. Captain Diilner, of the Ngahere, who went, into the Grtn'uiouth Hospital recently, has corno to Wellington, and is muoh improved in health. . Mr. R. H. Discharge of the Wellington portion of the Ccriuthic's cargo is expected to be completed in time for the vessel to leave for southern ports to-morrow. The Hinemoa is to leavo for Cook Strait, lights at 7.30 a.m. to-day. On this visit she will replace the buoy on Luke Rock, Queeu Oharlotto Sound. The Amoricaji four-masted barque Gol-den^Gatc-lias been fixed to load ca.se oil at San Francisco for Australian or New Zealand ports. She brought «, similar cargo to New Zoalaud a few months ago. 'l'he Lcitrim. the "Union Company's new steamer, runiiing under the auspices cf t-lio F. and £. Line, left Sydney on Saturday for Whangarei and Auckland on her maiden journey to New Zealand. The clipper barque White Pine has arrived at Antofagasta (South. Amorica) after an cicellent run of 40, days from Auckland. After discharging her cargo of coal the vessel will load back for Sydney. It will be remembered that the White Pine put into Auckland an May 31 for repairs, whilst on the voyago from Newcastle to the South American nort. She resumed her journey on June 20. While the Quauti'ty of inward cargo from Melbourne at Lyttelton continues to ho satisfactory, the export trade from Lyttelton to the Yictoria.n port has lately sunk to exceedingly small dimensions. Exemplifying 1 tin's, a soutliorn exchange says that tho Melbourne freight shipped, at Lyttelton on • Thursday by the Paloona aggregated four tons of general cargo aud 10 sheep. ■
Tho bagrue Manurciva left Clarence River on August 5 with a load of timber for Wellington and Wanganui.
The C. and I). liner Port Elliot will arrive from Napier to-morrow; for loading. Timber will be loaded at Greymouth this week by the Waipori for Sydney. Tho Defender will be dispatched for Picton, Greymouth, and Hokitika at noon to-day.

The- Marine Department has decided that it will not bo necessary' to hold any further inquiry into the mishap- to tho Opouri. which occurred when she was sheltering in Whareatea Bay (D'Drville Island) during a recent gale.
Sunning under engagement to the A. and A. Line, the steamer Walton Hall is duo at Lyttelton about August 28, from Now. .York, via the Panama Canal. After calling at Dunedin the Walton wifl go across to Australia to complete discharge. En route from Liverpool to New .Zealand, the F. and S. liner Devon arrtod at Melbourne on August 5. The vessel is now at Sydney, and will subsequently visit Auckland before coming on to Wellington, where she is due towards the end of this month. '
At 2.15 p.m. yesterday a top-sail schooner was- reported to be uassing Wellington Heads, bound east. Slio was too far off for her name to be distinguished, hut it ,1s presumed that, she was the auxiliary 'schooner Iluiu.. „
As Ihe .Union Comnany's carga-can-lcr Kurow was anproaching Auckland from Newcastle oil- Monday, a slight mishap occurred to her steering gear. The vessel was brought into port by means of the hand-steering gear, which was operated by two of tho seamen.
