Sir Gcorga Turner, formerly Com-' monwealth Treasurer and Premier of ' ■ iVictoria, is dead. •; ' . ,:V' [The-Right Hon; Sir George Turner,; K.C.M.G., LL.D., was born in Mel-! : -bourne, on August 8,1851. For many years he practised at the bar. Ho . first entered politics in 1889, when hu • was returned as member of ( the Vic-, torian Assembly. Ho was Commissioner of Trade and Customs and Minister of Health,'lß9l-92, and also Soli- . : citor-General until 1893, in the Munro . Bnd Shiels Governments. He was -Premier and Treasurer from September, 1894, to December, 1899; Minister for Defence 1894-95, and Premier and Treasurer again from, 1900. to 1901, ' when he retired from the State Legislature to enter ' the Commonwealth Parliament. Sir George Turner won high repute both in tho Stato and , Commonwealth political spheres. He took a leading part in the Federal movement, was a promiucnt member of the National Convention which framed the Constitution, and Treasurer of the first Federal Ministry, June, 1901, to , September, 1903.
