General Van de Venter, further west, encountered the enemy in a strong position in a defile ten miles west or Apapua, and in an all-night fight drove the enomy back on Apapua, inflicting severe losses. Simultaneously, our column swept southwards between Nguro and the coast, disposing of scattered parties. ; "General Northey is now approaching Iringa, on Lake Tanganyika. The Rhodesians have occupied the Island of Kirando, while the Belgians have occupied Karema, fifty miles north of Kirando, and the Belgians south of Lake Viotoriaare closely pressing the enemy." .
