~ nicCARTON NOTES.

(By Telegraph—Special .Correspondent.) . Christchurch,-August 13. ■ ■ Gold -Soult : has now deposed the others from the position" of 'favourite for the Winter Cup. He is now. quoted at a very' short price, with little, money offering, but plenty, of takers. .His time gaU lops -at headquarters have stood out by themselves. ■ On Saturday he gave George a. ISrcak' of three lengths and caught him in'a furlong,, and beat him-home by six lengths,- being on the steel. when he reached the post.- It is a singular coincidence that the best gallops at Riccarton invariably are .* done tho horse that subsequently wins the Winter Cup. This was the case in' Norfh-Easfs, NyUtnd's, and Penates' year. Tararu Jack has been responsible for sonie. first-class schooling work, since h© landed at Kiccaiton. One experienced judge who saw- him jumping alone last week says he never saw a horse go so fast or jumpso well by Himself.
