CONCILIATION COUNCIL

COACH-WORKERS' DEMANDS,

Mr. J. R'.' Triggs, Conciliation Commissioner, vesterday heard the demands filed by the New Zealand. Federated Coach-workers' Association, who asked for an award covering tho whole of tho Dominion. .Those present were: Mr. W.;A. Greiifell (representing the employers), arid Mr. A. R-osser (representing the employees). Messrs. W. J. Couzins (Auckland), J. Bett (Palmerston North), G. Dash (Waimate), Wall (Wellington), Israelson (Christchurcb), and Stansford (Dunedin), were also present. . . The principal points of the claims were as follow (present award rates and hours being given in parentheses):— Wages, Is. 6d. an hour (Is. with 1-Jd. an hour extra for leading hands; hours: 44 per week (48); overtime: Time and a half to 8 p.m., double time from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. (time and a quarter for first three hours, and time and a half thereafter), double time on Sundays and the following holidays: Now Year's Day, 2nd January, Good Fridav. Easter Monday, Labour Day, and, Cliristmas Day.' For apprentices the following-wages were sought:—lst vcar, 10s. per week; 2nd, 155.; 3rd, £1; 4th, £1 10s.; oth, £2 ss! It was claimed that 0110 helper only shall be allowed 111 each department except tho smith-shop, where there may bo one helper to each five ;helpers t&bc paid the following wages: 15 years of age, 12s. 6d. per week; 16, 17s. 6d.; 17, £1 Is.; 18. £1 10s.; 19, £1 155.; 20, £2; over 20s, Is. 3d. an hour. Tiio coimtcr-pvoposals filed by the employers practically embodied the present award. All argument in connection with the case was taken in committee, and tho council adjourned till this morning at 9 o'clock.
