CHRISTMAS BILLIES
NEW SOUTH WALES PLANS
As it is anticipated, that a very large number of billies will bo dispatched from New South Wales.for distribution among the troops at the front next Christmas through the Citizens' War Chest Fund, the War Chest Committee has published the following instructions arid suggestion:— 1 ■ 1. All billies should bo .of .uniform size, namely, three quarts, and must be painted brown or black. . 2. The War Chest Committee ' will, upon application, supply battalion and other comforts funds free of charges, with special cases in which to pack their billies. ~.111 3. Billies addressed to individual soldiers and'sent to the War Chest Committee. depot will either be handed to the comforts fund of the particular unit. to which the addressee. belongs, or forwarded direct to the commanding officer of this unit. . 4. No billies addressed to individual soldiers will be accepted except on the distinct understanding _ that in the event of* tho commanding officer- not being ablo to locate the addressee he may usu Vile billy for general distribution. 5. Billies should not be soldered. This is the advice of.tho War Chest Commissioner, who reports that soldering renders the billies difficult to open, and- often leaves them unfit for further use.. • ■ 6. The following instruction must be followed by all persons sending billies to the War Chest depot or to tho different comforts funds(a) Plum puddings, cakes, and ' all foodstuffs must be in hermetically sealed * rtins. Factory-mfide puddings and • cakes are preferable, as it has 1 beon found that they arrive in better condition than home-made. ■ (b) "Matches.or other inflammable i material must" not be included. , (c) Billies for individual soldiers must clearly show the number and'unit of the. soldier to whom tlio billy is addressed. . (d). No billies will be accepted; addressed to soldiers belonging to other than New South Wales units. ' : (7) All billies must be forwarded to the War Chest store not later than September ;l6j but as it will require several to take away the l ;lr n- e number anticipated, and as the saiUnc of suitable- steamers is irregular, it will; be advisable, m order to ensure delivery before Christmas, that as many as/possible roach the store before August 31. , 8 The following is a list of articles suggested by the War Chest as being suitable for inclusion in billies Plum puddings in tins, cakes in tins, tobacco, and cigarettes in tins, sweets (boiled) in tins, chocolate in tins, asparagus, ginger, whitebait, tinned vegetables, presorved fruit, curry powder, potted meats', knife, pipe, insect ponder, writing pad and pencil, postcards (addressed), housewife, drinkingcup, knife, fork, and spoon, 111 case.
