A STRANGE POSITION". "The. Government, of New Zcilind has no. knowledge of any authority given to Captain Whitney, of Auck- '■ land, to enrol volunteers from the mercantile marine for service with the motor-boat patrols in England," said the Minister of Defence (Hon. J. Allen) yesterday. He was referring to a paragraph published locally, to the effect that Captain 'Whitney was ask-' i')g for the names of master mariners ?''i° would-be willing to leave for the .Mother Country in the near future. ~"A 8 a matter of fact," continued tho Minister, "tho New Zealand Government is ill communication with tho Imperial authorities regarding a cablegram from them to the cffect that they are sending officers to this country in order to ascertain whether recruits can bo obtained from the Royal Naval Reserve and the Royal Naval Volunteer ui 6rvo or ccrtai » purposes. This cablegram was in reply to a communication from New Zealand. The Government has communicated with the Imperial authorities quite recently, stating that as far as the Royal Naval \ oluntcer Reserve is concerned we are ■ quite willing to ascertain how many men could be furnished.
"The Government requires first to be supplied with information regarding tho conditions of enlistment, and so forth in order that the matter may be placed before the .men likely to volunteer. This information has not yet come to hand, but so soon as it arrives the Government will act in the matter. Tho Government in the meantime has not delegates any power in connection with the proposal."
