By Telegraph—Presa Association. Melbourne, August 8. He made a lengthy comparison between the receipts of the V.R.C. and the Canterbury Jookey Club. The former received £14,000 from the bookmakers in fees, and the latter club through the totalisator received sufficient to provide £37,840 in stakes against the Victoria Club's £72,340, while the population of Melbourne was ten times greater. The committee expressed sympathy with the Government's'effort to curtail racing.

NOTES AND COMMENTS
IBT Gmsncoe.l Those concerned should note that acceptances for tlio minor events and final payments for the throe big events to be run at the C.J.C. Meeting close on Friday. Tho contiuued wot weather experienced in the south leads to the suggestion that the going will bo on the heavy side for"the opening of the C.J.C.
National Meeting, and in consequence the chances of horses known to act well in tho mud aro being discussed. For tho Oup thoro is an inclination to support tho Porirua representative Georgo and tho Wairarapa gelding Sir Agnes. Both horses .are thoroughly fit, and showed good form at Trentham. This applies especially in tho caso of Sir Agnes, who won in each of liis starts. No less than twenty-three horses wero on tho Mararoa, which sailed for tho south last evening. Tho news that Rongahoro will not bo sent to tho National Meeting comes as no surprise, as the big gelding is suffering from a puncture, in tho sole of the foot, caused by over-reaching. Bon lleve, who is engaged at the Riccarton fixture, has also been nominated for the Hack Hurdles and Otanga Handicap at Dannovirke, which meeting takes place on tho Wednesday following tho C.J.C. Meeting. Several (.tier horses are also engaged at both meetings, including Surtax, Gkjldenlyte, Mount Victoria, Waiparapara, Wirokino, Kirkbv, and 1 Tarero. J. W. Lowe has been confined to his bed lately with a sharp attack of pneumonia. He will bo unable to go south, so Seadown 'was sent down in charge of 0. Pritchard. Apparently tho owner of Los Angelos still nas hopes of tho old chostnut coming back to form, for ho is in regular work at New Plymouth, and has been accorded a nomination in the open sprint ©vent at Dannevirke. \ Judging'by bis display over tho big iences at Riccarton. yesterday, last year's National winner would seem to be little the worse for his fall at Trentham. L. Traill, who had the mount here, told tho writer that the gelding was going very well when he toppled over at the sod wall. Owners and trainers should keep in mind that tho'. Manawatu Hunt Club nominations close on Saturday next. If any branch of the game deserves encouragement it is to bo found in the Hunt Club meetings. The appropriate name of. Pinafore has been claimed for tho "Highden" yearling filly by Vasoo from Overall, who is being put through her facings by trainer G. R. Price at Awapuni. The .youngster is a stylish sort, and should turn out useful. Silver Monarch, who has been off the scene since the. Wanganui Meeting, is training on satisfactorily at Trontnam, and if he stands the winding-up process he will be given a run at tho Dannevirke Meeting. The withdrawal of Jean Laddo from the Winter Cup does not mean tlmt there is anything amiss with the bay mare, for she has been entered for the principal events at tho Dannevirke Meeting. Her stable companion Orleans is also engaged. The fact that Czaronus was too good for Ivooya in a schooling bout at lliccarton yesterday will not be pleasing news to the supporters of the Signalman mare for the Grand National Hurdles. It will not be surprising if ownor Oliver starts the maro in the Cup, and allows hor to forego her jumping engagements. It -is known that a leading jockey was approached last week ana sounded if he could accept the mount in the Winter Oup. Should the mare raco on the flat on' the opening day there would be little chance of her starting in tho Hurdles, as her party would hardly bo optimistic enough to think she would be good enough to win without a race in the Trial Hurdles. So far Kooya has only started once over hurdles. This was at Napier in the autumn, when she finished a long way behind Sensitive. Bairnsdale is being kept up to the collar at Trentham, and if the conditions are favourable tho Bezonian gelding will be given an outing at Dannevirke this month. Mr. E. J. Watt, who headed the list of winning owners on the other side in 1914-15, lias, had a very bad innings for. tho season just concluded. For tho first timo in tho history of racing in Australia, a lady has headed tho lißt of winning owners. This was tho Victorian sportswoman, Mrs. C. Widdis, whose three-year-old Wallace colt Patrobas won tho V.R.C. Derby and Melbourne Cup, and other events. English files .to hand suggest that Nassonian should have won the New Derby, in which ho was close up to Fifinella and Kwang Su. It appears that the American owner, Mr. J. Sanford, insisted that tho French jockey Meill should ride the colt, oven Kiougli he had been serving in France and had had no riding practice, and, in fact, had not seen the horse- until the day of the race. Nassonian was last six furlongs from home, and from this point. his rider was of no use to him, but even then ho wa6 only a neck away at the finish. The Derby is an unlucky raco for the family concerned, for a half-bred in Cranganour won in 1913 1 and was afterwards disqualified. A Press Association messago from Dunedin states that tho owners have, definitely decided not to send Bongahcre to the Grand National Meeting. A Press Association message from Melbourne last evening stated that Sea Pink nnd Do Gama liavo been scratched for tho Cup.
