A DEAL IN ISLANDS
' DANISH-AMERICAN TREATY OF SALE, Australian-New Zealan d' C&ble Association. New York, August i. The Danish West Indies Treaty has been signed by Mr. IL'ansing (Seoretary of State) and the Danish Minister. It will bo submitted to Senate for ratification. THE QUID PllO QUO. (Rec. The Danish Foreign Minister announced in the Jtigsdng the Government's approval of the sale, of the Danish-West Indie's to the United States. , The latter agrees to acknowledge Denmark's supremacy in Northern Greenland.
[The United States agreed to purchase the Danish West .Indies ffom Denmark at 'the price of five millions sterling. The treaty gives the United States possession of the Islands of St. Thomas, St. John, and Santa Cruz; These three islands named aro among the niost-w'es-torly of the Leeward Islands, and lie to the east of Porto liico. St. Thomas- and St. John, form part of a small group called Virgin Islands, most of -p-hich are Britishi , Santa Cruz is some distance to the south. Germany had been negotiating for tho islands when war broke out.]
