DISCHARGED SOLDIERS
THE INFORMATION DEPARTMENT.
Tho following progress statement of th'o work of tho Discharged Soldiers' Information Department as at August 1 has been issued by tho- Minister in chargo (the Hon. A. L. Hordman):—
(I) Total number of men on register-r----(A) Disposed of, 3503; (B) under 1028; (C) not ready for action (inoluding men returned by recent transports), C 99; total, 5236.
Ill) weports rcceivcd from interviewing officers, 3886; reports in hands of interviewing officers, 17D; reports issued, «65. , (ill) Particulars showing how cases dealt with:—(A) Cases disposed of: (a) Left-Now Zealand or cannot ascertain auuross, 124; (b) rc-enlisted or returned to military duty, or have work to return ' to, etc., 1386; (c) men who havo signed "assistance not required," 888; (d) men placed in employment, 815; (e) men who have not responded to repeated communications, and men who have accepted work tho Department found for them but failed to start work, 186; (f) men who havo drawn sections of land, 110; total, 350!).
(B) Cases under action: (a) Reports upon case 3 not yet returned by officers making inquiries, 170; (b) awaiting further advice (chieily men who have stated that they aro not j-et desiroiw of work), 539; (c) at prosent on employment wanted register, 310; total, 1028. (C) Cases not ready for action: Men recently returned to New Zealand, now convalescing, not ready'for employment, and not yet discharged by tho military authorities, 699; grand total, 5236. All tho : -unplaced men in tho Wellington district have been nominated fox differed? positions..
