Whakatano, August 3.

An outbreak of fira occurred at five o'clock this morning in tho main business block. Chilton's (confectionery), Duvall's (chemist), and Bowie's (tailor) shops were burned to the ground. The brigade s.ucceeded, in spito of a high wind, in confining the fire to ono block, although tho roof and sides of Franklin's drapery shop caught lire, but tho flames wero extinguished. .Vlate-glass windows on tho opposite sido of the Strand wero cracked for a considerable distance. Tho post office was for a time in consiSerable danger.

Tho causo of the fire is a mystery. The damage is roughly estimated at XISOO, but tho insurances are not yet available.. ■
