ASIATIC EGGS

* REQUEST FOR PROHIBITION. The president and executive of the New Zealand Poultry Association waited upon tho Minister of Public Health (Hon. G. W. Russell) yesterday to place before him the position with regard to the importation of Asiatic eggs into New Zealand. It was stated to the Minister thatorer <£2000 worth of Asiatic eggs in a preserved form had been imported into Lyttelton during the past 12 months, and it was believed that fully ,£IO,OOO worth of eggs had come into the Dominion in the same period. These eggs were largely used by bakers for pastry and other purposes, and by their use had considerably affected the sale of fresh eggs. It was asked that the Minister should enforce' regulations under the Side of Food and Drugs Act to prevent the importation going on, to the detriment of the local poultry Tndnstry. In reply, the Minister 6aid this was the- first time the matter had been brought before him, but he would obtain a full report on . tho subject. He would also procure from the Dominion Analyst a statement as to the relative food values of this product in the form in which it reached the Dominion and the fresh egg. He had to consider the quality and food value of a product; tho imported article might be cheaper, but it might lack food value. He considered that the poultry industry should bo fostered and protected, because it and fruit-growing must bo looked to to support many of our soldiers when they returned.
