RESTRICTION OF RENTS
THE EIGHT PER CENT. CLAUSE. A protest against the S per cent, amendment, introduced into tho Bill providing for restriction of rents, was mndo by a deputation from the Trades and Labour Council, which waited upon tho Prime Minister' yesterday. TJio deputation, which was introduced by Mr. A. H. Hindimirsb, M.P., comprised Messrs. M. .1. lieardon, F. Cornwoll, A. W. Croskery, -A. L. Monteith, 1. M'Kenzie, and! L. M. A. Ifearden. • Mr. M. ,1. lieardon said that tho Trades Council wished to see tho Bill - placed on the Statute Book in the form in which it was firct introduced in the -House. It was ithen on the lines of tho .Imperial Act, and contained no provision ior an alternative S per cent, assessment. Hcnts ruling before tho war could be taken as on a fair basis. Landlords in 'Wellington at that time were receiving a better return on the"capital invested than landlords in other centres. . Mr. Massey staled that the S per cent, nmondmont was similar to a clausa 5u the New South Wales Fair Rents Act.Sfr. Iteardou replied that in the Now South Wales Act it was provided that no legal expanses should bo paid by tho tenant. There was no such clause in the New Zealand Bill. Mr. Massey said he would consider the / request nut forward by the deputation. He had noped, however, that the Bill had been disposed of so far as the Lower House w.as concerned. -
