Dr. Newman is leaving 'Auckland in the Niagara, leaving for Vancouver on ; Tuesday. 'Dr. Newman proposes to make a short trip to England; returning in January. Mr. Wright, M.P., will look after any matters in Wellington East for Dr. Newman. Whilst in England. Dr, Newman hopes to see his son, Lieut. Frank Newman,'who is in charge of a trench mortar battery fighting on or near tho River Somme. Dr. Newman intends whilst in Great Britain to study social aud economic conditions arising out of tho war, and to their bearing upon New Zealand. - *
A wireless message from Tonga records the death, on July 19, of the wellknown owner nf Glendower Station, Wairarana, Mr. C. .T. Jury, who has lived chiefly' at his island plantation of late years. Mrs. Jury, who was in New Zealand visiting her mother, left Auckland on .Tulv 24 in ignorance of hev husband s death." Mr. Jury has two 6ons on active service, one having left some months ago, and one, aged 17 years,* with tho last Reinforcements.
Leave of absence for the .remainder of tho session was granted by the Legislative Council yesterday to tiie Hons. G. Jones and T. Parata. Surgeon E. S. F. Henderson, Director. General of Medical Services, who has been' on an official visit to Auckland, returned to Wellington yesterday.
Captain Ernest Robertson, who has been a momher of the medical staff at the Awapuui training camp for soma months past, has been appointed a medical, officer to the Sixteenth Reinforce* ments. Captain Robertson arrived in Auckland on Saturday on final leave. He will return to camp in about a week. i Corporal W. L. Cookson, reported on Tuesday to have been killed in action, was a member of the Canterbury Mounted Regiment, and left New Zealand with the Main Body. Ho was one of the very few who remained on'Gallipoli Peninsula throughout tho many months of fighting. He was neither wounded nor sick. Corporal Cookson was probably best known in Christchurch as a swimmer, at which branch of 6port he had few equals in New Zealand. For many years deceased was a representative of Cantorbury at the New Zealand Swimming Championships, and as such he came into contact a good deal with AVellington swimmers, with whom ho was particularly popular. Mr. T. E. Shand. of Ceylon, is a visitor to Auckland. Later ho will visit the south. After thirty-four years' service with tho Nelson Education Board, twenty, two of which havo been spent as head master at Wakefield, Mr. P. B. Peart lias retired. Tho board recently passed a, motion complimenting Mr. Peart on his long and faithful service. Messrs. W. Scott and J. M'Cullough, assessors of the Arbitration Court, arrived in Auckland on Monday. . Mr. L. P. Ayson, Chief Inspector of Fisheries, is at present in Auckland and will bo engaged there for a week or more in connection with tho local oyster supply, and with tho business of his Department generally. , Lieutenant Norman H. Hanna who was formerly a member of the coast defence detachment of the 3rd (Auckland) Regi. ment, has received a commission in a British regiment, and is now. on active service. His brother, Mr. P. M. Hanna, has also received a commission, and is serving at the front. . Messrs.' J. J. Dougall (Christchurch), V. Lamer (Auckland), J. Gilkison (Invcrcargill), J. E. Wilson .(Now Ply. mouth). J. Grimmond (Greymouth), E.' H. Williams (Hawke's Bay), and W. Snodgrass (Nelson) are visiting Wellington in connection , with the conference of Patriotic Relief Societies, to be held hero to-day. Mr. 11. Blackmail has been appointed manager in .New Zealand of the Goodyear Tyro and Rubber Company of Australasia, Ltd., vice Mr. Robert P. Lee, who has been transferred to the company's head office in Sydney. Mr. .1. P., M'Mahon, mnuagcr of tho Queen's Theatre, Auckland, is «■ visitor to Wellington. Before the. Advisory Hoard of the Federated Patriotic Societies dispersed yesterday, Mr. E. 11.-Williams moved a very hearty vote of thanks and nppreeia,' tion for tho 'manner in which the Hon. J. T. Paul had fulfilled the duties of ohainmin. Mr. V. Lamer seconded the motion, and paid a tribute also to Mr. L. 0. H. Tripp, tho vice-president. Flattering references were mado by the Hon. Mr. Paul, in his reply, to' tho work which had been done by the honorary secretary (Mr. B. W. Shallcrass). A special vote of thanks to that gentleman was recorded on the minutes. Mr.. J. E. Wilson notified that he would not ba a candidate for Taranaki on the Jward again, and he wished to say what an immense amount of good work he considered the board had done, and that as far as his society was concerned, it would bo guided by the decisions of the board.
