THE TURF
NOTES AND COMMENTS IBy Glencoe.l Entries for the Dannevirko meeting close on Saturday next. Weights for tho minor events at (he C..T.C. meeting are due on Friday. . The well-known Christchurch icinsman, A. lleudricksen, who enlisted some few weeks ago, .was up for examination during the week, but failed to pass the medical test. The District Committee of the Dun,edin Jockey Club has written to the ''president of tho Eacing Club pointing out that, in his opinion, the conference judges who recently upheld the Southland .Racing Club's appeal in -the Berry case, were mistaken. The fact of Kooya being engaged in the Trial Hurdles on the opening day of the C.J.C. meeting suggests that she may not bo a competitor in the Winter Cup. Should she succeed in Ihe first-named event, it will necessitate her putting up Sib. penalty in tho Grand National Hurdle Race. It would seam that Kilboy is already one of the most fancied candidates for the A.J.C. Derby. Last week a Wellington admirer of the colt cabled across to Sydney with the idea of backing him for tho blue ribbon, but the quotation was so ridiculously short as to preclude any business being done. Admirers of Mr. J. 13. Eeid's colt who think he can win would be studying their own interests if they waited until the day of the race before making their investments. The well-known horseman, H. G. Coker, who has been training for some time, contemplates taking out a jockey's license again for next season, and will resume riding over obstacles. He was out at Jliccarlon on Saturday, schooling the Southland steeplechaser, Heatherlea, on which lie will probably have the mount in his engagements at the Grand .National meeting. Glorify was entered for the hack events at Eiccarton; but she is not to make the trip south. The Winter Cnp candidates, Jeannot, Rorke's Drift, and Hultifual, were associated over six furlongs on Saturday, finishing in the order named. Jeannot's eft'ort \yas specially pleasing, as ati throe carried a fair amolmt of weight. Eorke's Drift, who has the reputation of being a bad track horse, also went attractively, but Multifual's showing was not so satisfactory. A Hawke's Bay paper mentions that Braeburn schooled over hurdles, with Jlulticipal and St. Elm on. a recent mornving, and gave a good exhibition, pulling up well. If the Six Laddo gelding goes on. th« right way he is likely to depose Waimai from the position of favourite before the day of the race. Glenmore and Queen's Post, in charge of T. Lloyd, and Kooya and Alultunj, in charge of P. Meagle, were shipped to Lyttelton last-evening. C. -Emerson end A. Eeed, who have been on, a holiday visit to Sydney and Melbourne, are expected to leave on their return by this week's boat. Both boys have been riding regularly during their absence, and should be in good form on their return. It is stated tha.t C. Emerson has been offered the mount on Heeltap in the Winter Cup. , Referring to the ex-New Zealand jockey, L. H. Hewitt, a Sydney writer says:—"There are jockeys whose .energy in riding work entitles them to employment, and one- of tho number is L. Hewitt. He does not live in liandwick. but he is at the service of trainers at the track named every morning. A jockey as well as a horsa must get through a fair share of work in order to strip fit, but some of the former occasionally lose, sight of that 'fact, more especially after a run of luck." Silver Fowl, dam of Fifinelia and Silver Tag, was very smart as a two-year-old, but did t little good for Mr. E. Hulton, ■ who purchased her for .£I2OO prior to the commencement . of her three-year-old career. However, at the stud Silver Fowl has more than repaid Mr. Hulton for any failures in his colours. Merrimax, lost. 71b.,'was amongst the unplaced. division in the hurdles at Moonee Valley last month. It looks as if the .Now Zealander will require to improve considerably to have a chance of success in the-Australian Hurdles, run at Caulfield on Saturday next. A Press Association telegram from Auckland states that Waimai, Te Onga, Tenacious, and Ngatoa left for Wellington last night, en route for Riccarton.
