CHESS NOTES

LOCAL TOURNAMENTS. Good progress continues to be made in the annual handicap tourney of tho Wellington South Clu.b. Harper'is at present leading with a tally of 5 wins and 1 loss. He is closely followed by Berry, 5-2, Purchas I}-H. Perrott SHU. Auderson 3-2, and A. Clark 3-2. There are five more rounds to be played, and a few outstanding games to be'disposed of. A close finish seems assured.

Members are looking forward to tho match which they are to play next Monday, at Ngaio against the local club's representatives. A most' enjoyable contest is anticipated. The Wellington Chess Club's executive was -unable to hold a "Potherick" Tourney Inst year owing to the small number of active members on the roll. This year there has been an encouraging increase of membership, which enabled the committee to launch a handicap tourney a month ago with 13 entries. The best scores to date have been made by Messrs. White, Tanner, and Bock, each of whom has so far resistered a. possible. Mr. Purchns, the. Wellington South, champion, has scored 4 wins and 1 loss. He Is - closely followed. by Mr. Barnes, one of the veterans who rallied round the club in its hour of need. F° is alone on the scratch mark, and has notched 8 wins and 1 loss to date. Mr. Gyles, sen., with 2 wins, 1 loss and a draw, is also well to the fore.

Mr. A. J. Larking, a Crimean veteran,. Is still leading f in the Working Men's Club's annual handicap chess tourney, his tally' being now sis clear wins.
