FARMERS' INCOME TAX
_ 4 : INTERESTING RETURN. The following information regarding the farmers' income tax imposed last year was given in a return presented to the House on Saturday afternoon, on the request of 11 r. G. V. I'earcc:— The amount collected under fanners' income tax of 1915 was .£2-19,048, made up as follows:—Amount received from income tax payers of ,£SO and under 34,717 Amount received from income tax payers of over .£SO 214,331 • Total -6219,018 Sir Joseph Ward, presenting the return, said there bad. been very little trouble, about getting from farmers the information necessary for the assessment of the farmers' income tax, not nearly eo much trouble as there was some years ago, .when the incidence of taxation was altered, and the land and income taxes were substituted for the property tax. This was due to the assistance given to farmers by the Taxing Department. And the Department would in the. same way assist taxpayers with the compilation of their excess profits returns for war tax purposes in such a way that he did not anticipate any trouble about tho collection of the tax. He had received many communications from people who wanted directions, and he had sent replies, mostly by telegraph, to remove their difficulties. The Taxing Department had done very useful wort in helping farmers with these returns, and would continue to do it in connection with the' war tax.
