DR WARDLAW THOMPSON
Tho death was recently announced of ■ tlie Rev. Dr. Ralph Watdlaw Thompson, ' who for 33 years was tho Foreign Secre- ; tary of'tho London Missionary Society. He was 74 years of age. j The 'son of one of the society's mis- ] sionaries, he was born in South India,, ; and received his early education in Cape j Town, going through his theological ! course in Oheshunt College. His first pas- .-. ':i torate was Ewing Place Congregational \ Church, Glasgow, and ho was afterwards " ; minister of Norwood Congregational ". '! Church, Liverpool. In ISSI he became ; ' secretary to tho London Missionary So- . N ,■ j ciety, and was recognised as one of tlje greatest authorities on foreign mission work. In the course of his duties he ~i visited tho missions of tho socioty in- ;; India, China, South Africa, Madagascar, ■ '■ ] New Guinea, and tho South Seas. In recognition of his splendid work Dr. Thompson was unanimouslyelected chair- ■.; inan of the Congregational Union of Eng- j land and Wales in IMS. Glasgow Um-' I versity conferred -upon him the D.D. de-r - ; greo, a distinction which had been held by his grandfather, Dr. Ralph Wardlan, Ho retired from office in 19U.
