NO SUNDAY GOLF

. &_ ■ COUNCIL'S DECISIVE VOTE. Tho question as to whether there is to be Sunday golf on the municipal links at Berhamporo or not was decided by tho City Council last evening, on. a motion by tho Mayor that a by-law bo drafted prohibiting tho game to bo played on ,the said links.

The question was introduced early in tho ovening by a deputation consisting of tho Rev. Dr. Gibb (representing the Presbyterian Orphanage), tho Rev.- Mr. Reader (Methodist), who represented the Ministers' Association, and tho Hon. ,T. G. W. Aitken, representing the Lord's Day Alliance. . When the question came beforo the council at a later hour, the Mayor moved that the By-Laws Committee, in consultation with the City Committee, be instructed to draft a by-law prohibiting the playing of golf on tho municipal links at Berhamporo. Mr. Luko said he did not intend to • say much about tho matter as they all know his convictions. He thought they should respect the conventions of society, and in allowing golf ou public grounds they would bo violating a trust that had been Teposed in them.

Councillor Hildreth' seconded the motion, stating that by prohibiting golf being played on the municipal links, they were taking away ho existing privilege opinion. He moved as an amendment that the motion be adjourned for a fortnight. Councillor L; M'Kcnzie eeconded the amendment.

The amendment, on being put, was lost, and the motion. was carried by 7 votes to i. Tho voting was as follows:— Ayes: • Councillors Atkinson, Barber, Bush, Godber, Hildreth, Thompson, Bennett. Noes: Councillors Luckie, M'Kenzie, Hutcheson, and Frost.

Councillor Hutcheson explained his at. titude by stating that he wished to have a division on the question.
