NOTES AND COMMENTS

!Br Gmncoe.l

Acceptances for the three big. events and general entries for the C.J.C. Winter. Meeting close to-morrow night. • The Brackenfield Hunt Club Meeting will take place to-day. The Marion trainer H. Home has decided not to take Coral King to Riccarton, but the. big fellow will most likely bo given a, run at Dannevirko the week following. • J. Lloyd will take the jumpers Glenmore and Queen's Post to Eiccarton. The last-named is reported to have freshened up considerably ns the result of a few days' spell after the Trcnthnm Meeting. Owing to tho heavy rain experienced recently at Marton, the tracks have become very heavy, and in consequence Mr. J. .Bull has sent New York, Golden March,- and Awahou iu to Wauganui to be trained there. So' far J. •Cameron has not decided whether to make the southern trip with the steeplechaser Tarero,. hut a decision will be arrived at in the. course of the next couple of days. Mr: E..V. Riddiford has been confined to his room for a week with a rather severe attack of influenza, but he is now himself again. Ho was considering giving Chakwana a trip to' Riccartoa with a view of racing her in the sprint events ..there,, but the idea has been abandoned, as the maro is not built for Welter weights. The daughter of Peacp is doing well on the tracks, hut she is much on the big side; and. will want a few races' to get' her into proper trim.

There is a large contingent of hunters in work on : the Awapuni and Feilding tracks in preparation for the Manawatu Hunt Club's totalisator meeting, which takes place at Awapuni at the end of August. Present indications joint to the gathering being a most successful one. In the Winter Cup A. Oliver will have the mount on Seddel-Bahr, and R. Hatch will be up on Glenroy. So far the Awapuni horseman W. Bell has not accepted a', ride. ■

Square Deal is in regular work at Feilding, and looks uncommonly well. It is stated that he is to undergo a New Zealand Cup preparation. Last year's Cup winner, Tangihpn, is also doing steady work at Feilding, and A. Attwood's charge, never looked better thnui he does now. ■ -.:

The owner of Jackman regularly follows the hounds on tho bay ge|ding, and in nil probability the son of Handsome Jack will be entered for tho Dannevirke Steeplechase. ' .

There have been some cheap bargains picked up amongst jumpei'9 who havo subsequently won good races in the Dominion. Amongst the number may be mentioned the National' Hurdles winners Mcdallius and Paisano, who cost. .£lO and ,£2O respectively. Winners of tho big Kiccarton 'Steeplechase were, too, often sold for mere songs. Amongst this class are Captain Jingle, .who onco changed hands for J2B. Ngatoa was bought for £17, To Arai for Ml 10s., and Continuance for ,£63, while a prospective National winner in Bransfield was bought by his present owner for .611.
