NOTES AND COMMENTS

Acceptances for tho Winter Cup and Grand National Steeplechase and Hurdles close 011 Friday next. At the samo time entries for the minor events, must be made. The Brackenfield. Hunt Club meeting frill take placc 011 Thursday on the Am° berley course. Tho New Plymouth trainer, J. George, returned homo alter the Wellington meet ing, and left Crown Pearl and' Glenroy in charge of J. W. Scott. The pair will be shipped to Riccarton this week.

The Awapuni trainer, A. Shearsbv, has booked accommodation for three of Sir. F. Armstrong's horses at Riccarton. The team will probably consist of Cherry Blossom, The Hound, and Sleight of Hand.

On Thursday last-Idealism was brought from Karamu to Hastings, and given a school over tho big country. Ho jumped fast, and cleverly, and showed no signs of soreness.'

Compulsion, winner of the Hunters' Plate iit the South Canterbury Hunt Club meeting last week, is by the Australianbred Crichton, who won several races in the Dominion. Crichton is now at the stud in Victoria.

Though Nicomar failed to win at Trentham, he showed himself to bo a smart jumper, and he may develop into a useful hurdler with a 'littlo more experience. The chestnut son of Spalpeen will probably be nominated on Friday for the minor jumping events at the C.J.C. National Meeting. \ There is said to be some doubt as to whother Bransfield is by Birtenhead or Renown. The Hon. J. D. Jrmond, who had Vascular running in the Wellington Steeplechase, thought very little of tile gelding, and 'sold him for a matter of £8, so the owner informed an inquirer last week. ... According to' latest accounts from Melbourne there is littlo chance of El I'ro-' grosso being sent across for the Grand ■National Meeting.-... Mr. G. P. Donnelly, has claimed the following names for some of his rising two-year-oldsßay filly by Demosthenes —Pearlsliot, Pearl <le Mont; chestuu.t filly by Demosthenes—Formula, Eloquence; black filly by Demosthenes—Rangiao, Elocution; chestnut filly by Demosthenes— Gold Powder, Silver Tongue; chcstnnt filly by Demosthenes, Impediment. The nomenclature is of tho happy order in tho last four instances, for Demosthenes was tho greatest orator of antiquity, who, though suffering from an impediment in his speech, overcame the defect, and proved himself a silver-tongued elocutionist. The t.wo hunters nominated for the South.. Canterbury Steeplechase, on Thursday, ivho also figure as candidates for the Grand National Seeplechase, were Tho Brewer and Oratonu, kit both declined their encasement. ICaupokonui was the only Grand National aspirant' that raced last week, when he ran second in the Hunters' Hurdles, and third in the Hunter's Plate. His form was not very encouraging. Wellwood was the most successful horse at tho Timaru incoting, winning the Tally-ho Steeplechase and Hunt Club Cup, but he is not a candidate for Grand National honours. • Ikowai, winner of the South Canterbury Stcepleohase, is a useful sort of hunter, arid may be seen to better advantago later. These two will probably figure among the general entries for tho C.J.C. Grand National Meeting, which close next Friday. Both 'stood •out rather 'in- the class they met at Timaru, and while being fairly good, jumpers, they gave somo promise of pes6essing the ability to see out a lengthy course." Mr. T. Nicol, of Ashhurst, has donated £25 to the Racing Club; to be spent in plate to be added as sv prize to the Ashhurst Cup. It is stated 011 authorit)' that the latter race this year will be worth something more than .£2OO. It is often remarked that jockeys obtain a great deal more prominence and kudos than, . trainers, for .successes, -andsuch is undoubtedly- based on solfil grounds. Indeed, in some cases the trainer i 3 quite overlooked. A country racing club- in New South Wales has risen to

tho occasion in a practical manner to right matters and gWe tho man who trains tho horso first place. A prize of '.£SO, offered by tho Wyong Park Club fo the trainer furnishing most winners at their meetings during the Reason was won by the Jtosohill trainer, Mr. Booth. TRAGEDY KING SCRATCHED. By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, July 22. Tragedy King was scratched for the Grand National Hurdle Handicap at II a.m. to-day. SUCCESS OITN.Z. HORSE By Telegraph-Press Asaociaticm-Coojrirht (Rec. July 22, 8.30 p.m.) Sydney, July 22. Now Zealand horses that recently arrived" were particularly successful at suburban meetings. Zuland won several races, and. Come was successful at Rosehill, winning tho hurdle race to-day. FIXTURES. •Aug. 10, 17, and 19—C.J.C. Grand National. Aug. 23 —Dannevirke R.C. Steeplechase.
