A PECULIAR CASE
Bridget Wiltshire appeared in the Magistrate's Court yesterday oa a charge oi inducing her two daughters who ar® wards of the State to abscond from tho Receiving Home at Chrlstchurch.' Mr. J. J. M'Grath, who appeared for tha accused, stated that the two girls were out on licensed service in Christchufch. One was employed, he believed, as the sole domestic servant in a large house, and received only 9s. per week. The other daughter was also in domestic service at a wage of Bs. per week. The girls had been placed in the Receiving Home by tho mother herself 6omo years ago. Sho had since resided in Australia, where her circumstances had undergone a favourable change, and wishing to have her daughters with her had come over 'from Brisbane and was about to return to Australia with the girls on July 13, but was prevented. Inspector Hendrey said that Mrs. Wiltshire had taken out tickets to Sydney under assumed names. She no doubt acted as most mothers similarly circumstanced. but tha children were the wards of the State. Mr. M'Gratla admitted that an offence had. been committed. The mother bore an excellent character, and committed this technical offence through love for. her daughters. He had communicated with the Education Department, and he believed they would agree to the girls returning with their mother.. His Worship explained that the offence was punishable with a heavy' fine, but in this .instance he would enter a .conviction and OTder accused to come up for sentence wlien called, upon.
