SOLDIERS' CHILDREN
1 . THE ALLOWANCE INCREASED. An announcement concerning the allowance to be paid- in respect, of the children of soldiers on active service was made in the House of Eeprese'nta?ives yesterday by the Defence Minister (the Hon. J. Allen). . j[r. Allen stated that as a result of its consideration of the question of soldiers' separation allowances Cabinet had decided to increase the weekly allowance for each child from 3s. 6d. lis. per ■week. (Hear, hears.) Cabinet na<s also given instructions that no married men with more' than three children were to be enlisted in future under thp voluntary system unless there was some special reason. (Hear, hear.) The increased allowance for children would come into operation as from July 1, 1916. He hoped that there would be 110 demaad to have it made retrospective, as it would be very difficult to make it retrospective. It would apply from July 1 to the children of all soldiers who were now at the front or in camp.
