BLACK SWANS ON WAIRARAPA LAKE
(To the Editor.) ° Sir,—At a meeting recently held by the Acclimatisation Society I notice it was resolved to apply to the Government for a grant for their ranger to collect swan eggs on the Wairarapa Lake. In the interest of sport I mako a most emphatic protest against such destruction. Surely the society cannot be aware of the great diminishing in numbers in recent years of these beautiful birds, attributable, I think, to close settlement, draining of lagoons and destroying natural cover. One time you could go out and get a bag, now you are lucky if you can get one bird for a feed. Settlers in this district have been prosecuted for taking a few eggs, and now the society is contemplating destroying them wholesale, for the purpose, I presume, of supplying pastrycooks 1 in Wellington. Let me tell you, sir, if such practices are followed out I think the swan on the Wairarapa Lake will soon be as extinct as tho moa.—l am, etc., FEATHERSTON GUN.Featherston, July 14.
