TRENTHAM RACES

SECOND DAY /KOOYA WINS FLEET HANDICAP WIROKINO WINS AGAIN The weather was line, but cold, for the seoond day of tho Winter Meeting of the Wellington Basing Club. The racing was quite up to the standard of the first day, and the large crowd which attended was rewarded with , some spleudid finishes. As on the opening day, a large number of soldiers from the Trontham camp -wero present. The jumping 'was again good, and the Anzao Steeples was a pretty race, to watch. The consistent Wirokino, who is owned in Wellington, was always a winner, and barring a couplo of fences which he chanced, his display of jumping was perfect. 1 The finish in the: Meet Handicap was very close, .and it was not until the numbers went up' that Anyone coiild be sure whether Kooya or George had won. The Judicial Committee reviewed the running of the winner, but decided to pay out the dividends and adjourn . the inquiry until Saturday. T. • Pritchard, rider of Try /• gain, was suspended for three .months for crossing in, the Selling Eace. Speculation was spirited, tho machine handling .£3G,319 for tho day. : ' In. the opening event tho pen was put through the names of Banian, Sir' Solo, Birkful, and Amber and White, leaving seven runners.. The field was. considered weak, and the Porirua mare, Portland Lady, was made a good favourite, but she failed to run well, and did not reach the front at any stage of the, race. : Ormesby made the pace from Prince. Delaware, who fencod badly. Patronymic, ran to tie front at the half-mile, and won very easily. His display was a great improvement on that oi tho opening day, when Nicomar and Ormesby finished in front of'him.

Toro Toro and Bisogne were the best supported in the Liverpool' Handicap. Mandoline and Cherry Blossom wero in front till the course proper was renohod, where Bisogne bolted up 011 tho rails,, and won very easily from Cherry Blosson.. Ladogeur was a neck away, Black. Lupin and Orleans were tho next to finish. Toro Toro and M-nndolino failed badily after having every ohance to win.. The top-weight, Harbour Light, was a warm favourite in the Jumpers' • Flat Handicap, with, the useful Purselillcr in second place. Tho favourite failed to present Pursofiller with 41b., and tho latter gave him a good 71b. beating. Master Eegal led out of the straight after tv perfect start, with Awahou next and the favourito in behind. Down tho back PiiTsefiller took up the running from P&rewanui, and ■ at the half-mile the favourite was in second place. ,At the straight eutranco he moved up, but the leader -was going , well, and came away, again when tho favourite challenged. She won bv a couple of lengths, whilo Crib was some distance away, followed, bv Tararu Jack, Marconi, and Master llegal. Awahou ran badly and seemingly has lost- all form. \ ■ ,

Miraculous and Ballyhar were tlie scratohings in tho Selling Eace. Mount Victoria was a good favourite, but any chance he had was spoilt by Master Achilles carrying him out at tho. turn. In the straight the last-named assorted himself and won easily. Try Afjain was third, and' then camo Holsingiora] and Pyjama, with Strabo last. The winner realised 200 guineas at auction, and goes into J. Gravestock's stables at Opaki. He is to rnco in the colours of Mr. G. Foreman,. who used to own. a successful performer, in .Full Eate, ; ..

The Anzac Steeples -was a very good betting event, four of tlio runners being evenly backed: As on tho opening day, the jumping throughout was perfect, and it was :a splendid contest to watoh. Kirkby showed tho way for a time, but Wirokino's jumping took him to tho frojit, and though ho chanced a couple of fences, ho never looked . getting beaten. -. Gluepot ran into second iplaco a-mile; from home, but ho had no. chaaco with tho ■■•winner.'.."Queen's Post rangood xaoe, but could do no better than run a poor third. Marton ran badly and failed to Bhow up at any Btage of the race. The Aucklander Hopye was another failure, and was ovidently suffering from the effects of tho fall lie got on tho opening day. Captain Jack pulled up lamo, and. Darby Paul fell at the top of the course.

The' Gisborno liorsa. Otara and Comely divided. tho honours in the Peninsula Handicap, 'in which Sir Agne3 and Cantain Gloasop wero withdrawn. When the field came into line, Consultation and Otara wero prominent, with Bairnadale. Up tho straight Manu and Toki put in claims on tho inside, but Comely finished fast on tho outside, and won by a length from Rio, who also finished wido out. Otara just headed Toki, and then came Manu and Bairnsdale. Tho winner was evidently improved by her run on tho opening day. There is not much of her, but sho seems to carry weight well. Tho Fleet Handicap was the big evont for tho fiat performers. Maid-o'-Gowrio and George divided favouritism, but the former drew an outside position, and did not get the break she had oil tho opening day. Tho start was a good one, but Sedd-el-Bahr . and Haumakaka wero squeezed, out. At tlio six furlongs, Maid-o'-Gowrio and Lady Lbuisa were piloting tho field,' and' a furlong further Georgo moved up, as did Glenroy. At the halfmilo tho last-named and Jeannot joined the favourite, but entering the straight George and Kooya rushed to tho front, and for two furlongs the jpair were hard ndden, with hauds and heels. They passed the post locked together, but the maie gotj the last stride in and won by a nose. Sedd-01-Bahr dashed out of the ruck and got third plaoe; then-came Glenroy, Memo Gain, Lady Black, and Jeannot in that order. King Chiara, who was well baoked, pulled up very sorel The winner ran a much better race to-day than in tho Parliamentary Handicap, in which she was cut out at the barrier ami w h}Ppod the field the whole way. fiie concluding event .was a big betting race, Merry Andrew, -Goldou Glade, and Munition all heavily supported, lliero were several fresh norses in the race, and ono of them; in Martyress, acted as runner-up to Melford. At the start tho nrst to l>ecoma prominent was Foeman, and, closely attended by Merry Andrew, ho led into tho straight, but the pair ran off tho course and carried several of the others out. When the field was straightened up, Golden Glade; in the centre, was in front with Munition, but several others were close up. Ballyhar, who' had got up on tho Tails, appeared likely to win inside the distance, bu,t Melford and Martyrcss then came on tho scene, and, hard ridden, tho pair passed tho post together, Melford. getting the verdict by a narrow margin, with Golden Glade and Ballyhar in a lino. Tho winner was neglected on the machine.
