Lievtl. J. H. Or. Murdoch, son of the late Mr. 11. M. Murdoch, of Hastings, has been killed in action in France. The late Mr. Murdoch became a partner in the firm of Sainsbury, Logan, and Williams some eight years ago. M'Millan, who is inquiring into the methods of marketing timber in various parts of the world, on behalf of tho Canadian Government, will leave Sydney for New Zealand next week, lie will spend about a. fortnight in New Zealand, and will then leave for Sydney, en route to the Philippines, China, ami Japan. , Ihe Auckland Chamber of Commerce has passed a resolution declaring that the suggested tax on war profits is wrong in principle, and will in numerous cases result in gravo injustice being done. The Chamber (staffs a Press Association telegram) recommended more liberal provision to meet rases of hardship than that proposed. The method of assessing tho standard income must prove to be ineffective in case of farmers. The Chamber was of opinion a tax on all exports which had increased in value since August, 191J, should l>e imposed.
