RACING AT TRENTHAM WELLINGTON MEETING OPENS TO-DAY. The Winter meeting of the Wellington Eaciug Club will.commenco at Trgntham to-day. The jumpingfixture tnuways a popular ono with owners, and thero is likely to ba a largo crowd present. The programme "will consist' of eight events, and the first race will start punctually at 11.30 a.m. The club's patrons aro reminded that trains leave To Aro at 9.51 and 10.51 njn., Lambton at 10.10, 10.19, 10.31, 10.46, a.m., and 12.0 p.m. The Vittoria Hurdles is tho opening event, and there aio nine acceptors. Tho top-weight, Austin, lOst. 111b., may find his weight too much in tho heavy going, and tho majority of backers may pin their faith to Nicoraar, who carries Mr. G. P. Donnelly's colours. Arlington and Patronymic are both winners over fences. Orme3by is a greatly improved horse, and as ho is such a Rood one in fcSivy' going he may. be tho for Nioomar to. Iu the Stewards' Handicap, six furlongs, there is a very big field. Avon Park is top-weight, but she has done little work since arriving at headquarters. Seadown may be in want of a .race or two, though ho will strip well. Ladogeur is a smart performer, and will give a good account of himself. The Sir Laddo gelding is master of weight and acts well in heavy going. Sea Lord, George, and Bieogno also go through heavy going; well. The former has been most consistent of late. George will have Deeley in the saddle, and Bisogno will be ridden by-Goldfinch. At Ellerslie the latter spread-eagled the field with an electrical finish at the end of the Farewell Handicap, and he may be a good favourite to-day. His'winding-up gallop was the fastest of the week. Hopje, who is at the head of the field in the Hack and Hunters' Steeples, is a great jumper, and at his first start over big fences he ran third to New York and Capt., Mackay in the Tainaki Steeples, at Ellerslie. This form is good enough for backers to make for him today. Wirokino is a winasr over.big fences, but the lot ho beat at Hastings was not good, and the distance may be too far for him. On the other hand he is a safe jumper, and goes -well in mud. The following are the probable starters and riders in tho Wellington Steeplechase:— Tarero, list, lib., W. Young. Ngatoa] lOst. 81b., L. Traill. 1 Fagot, lOst. 71b., F. Tutchen. Captain Jaclc, lOst. 31b., E. Eae. Marton, lOst. 2lb„ F. Flynn. Vascular, 9st. 131b., W. Bush. Naupata, 9st. 131b,; H. M'Sweeney, Black Soa, Ost. 71b., F. Ellis. New York, Ost. 71b., A. M'Donald. Merry Lad, Ost. 71b., H. Burt. _ i Bransfield, Ost. 71b., B. PoulgTain. ( Queen's Post, Ost. 71b., A. Ward. The top-weight is a good, useful horse, and has been most consistent this season. His one failure was at Hastings, where ho made a serious mistake at the doubfo, which lost him a lot of ground. To-day he will bo ridden by a past master over country, and can be depended upon to go well. Ngatoa is another horse greatly fancied. He is a safe jumper . and a great stayer, £which will tell in his favour in the heavy going. Fagot is certain to get round, and further his rider will take him the .' Shortest possible course. Marton has many friends, and the country here will suit him. Vascular is an improving horse, the best of whom has not been seen. Of the/others it can safely be said that-they all possess good chances, and altogether the race wears a very open appearance. For tho Parliamentary Handicap, the following are likely to,go to the post:— Kooya, lOst. 121b., W. Young. Flying Start, lOst. 61b., F. 11. Jones. Lady Louisa, lOst. 51b., O. Carraont. Multifual, lost. lib., B. Deeley. Orleans, lOst. 31b., If. E. Brown. Eingform, 9st. -91b., J. O'Shea. 1 Harbour Light, 9st. 71b., S. lteid. King Cln'ara, 9st. 71b., H. Goiunnch. Sir Knox, Ost. 71b. : , A. Watson. Hygia, 9st., J. Buchanan. - • Merrio Gain,. 9st., H. Lowe. '; Maid o-' Gowrie, 9st., O. M'Carten. Haumakaka", Ost.,'W. Bell.—■ . ; l'neuru, -Ost.,' J. Olson - • - Rumania; flsk.L.Wilson. ■ Kooya a'nd'Xa'dy'.Louisa.seem to be the pair most talked of, but the event is open. The recent form , of, Kooya at Napier and Otaki will' givo her much support, as Golde'nlyte,' who raced well at Hastings, was in .receipt, of 2st. from Mr. Oliver's mare ran second to him at Napier. 1 Flying' Start may find the distanco beyond him, but LadyLouisa carries weight well and acts in bad goiug. King Chiara has .his winning form at Ellerslie to commend him. .lueuru goes well on the tracks, but she has lately earned the reputation of being undeliable. For the Winter Hurdles the following aTe the probable starters ■ and their riders:— Tragedy King, list. 31b.,' B. Hawkins. Styrax, lOst. 121b., Stan. VReid. Leonta, lOst. 101b., F. Flynn. Crib, lOst. 01b., T. Humphries. : Pursefiller, lOst. Sib., B. Ponlgxain, | Tararu Jack, lOst. 71b., A. Julian. Crown Pearl, lOst. 71b., L. Traill. Sir Donald, lOst. 21b., J. Deerey.Art, lOst,' 21b., D. M'Kay. Tauira, lOst., H. M'Sweeney. Gladful, lOst., W. Bush. Marconi, Ost. 211b., S. Henderson. Gluepot, 9st., J. Anderton. .'Czaronus, Ost., A. J. M'Flinn. Styrax has keen racing so consistently of late that he may be tho public choice, with Gladful and Marconi next in demand. Tragedy King is a Very useful horse, and is rightly at the top of the lipndicap. Gladful will act well iu the going, and so will Marconi, whose light weight will assist him over tlio last halfmile. Gluepot and Czaronus, who axe on the minimum, will not want for supporters.
The Trial Plato investments may ba largely centred in Toro Toro, a placegetter in open.company on two occasions at Ellerslie, and flymenwus, a likelylooking colt, and the representative of the powerful Karamu stable.
The concluding event is the Te Aro Handicap,. six furlongs. Otara ]nay bo an absentee, and the next on the list is the very useful Toki, runner-up twice to Multifual at Gisborne. The distance may be a trifle short lor the Multifid gelding, but the welter weights and heavy track will prevent the others getting a break in the first, part. Comely, from Riccarton, is a previous winner on this course. She is on the small side, but carries weight' well. The others are not a striking lot. ,
Nominations for the Braclcenliekl Hunt races at the Amberley racccourso close on Thursday.
