ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY
MARKETING SWAN'S EGGS. Mr. L. O.'H. Tripp presided at a meeting of the Council of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society last evening. With regard to a suggestion ol the society's favouring the extension of the area of Tongariro Park, a letter was received from tho Prime Minister agreeing in the main to the suggestion, but pointing out that the surveyors were at present busy surveying land for settlement, aud so the matter would of necessity have to bo held over. 'The society's ranger, submitted a report on the scheme proposed for collecting swan s: eggs for sale. The scheme is at present being carried out by ifche Canterbury Society, and it is recognised that the eggs, are of considerable use for'pastrycooks. -It was decided to apply to tho Government for the necessary authority to collcct swan's eggs, the ranger to be instructed to collect eggs on the Wairarapa Lake, and market them for a week, so that it could he ascertained whether the scheme could be carriod on at a profit.
An interesting, letter was received from Inspector Cullen, who had been making inquiries from authorities in India on the subject of introducing native birds, such as the snipe, from that country.
