CONSTABLE STREET FIRE STATION
DOES THE GOVERNMENT OBJECT? Over a year ago it was decided that I \\ ellmj*to)i South and the rapwllv-Krow-nig suburbs to the east of the 'Mount Victoria range required a new fire brigad© station, s and for economy's sake, a* well as for general utility, a site on the lowa Belt, at the, top of Constable street—at present a barren, untidy spot —was selected. It was agreed on all sides that the site was ideal, as it waa on the crest of the hill that commands a view not only of the whole of Newtown, but of Kilbivnie, north and south, and Hataitai, and that being 60 elevated the motor fire-engines would always bo able to move free'iy at once, which is not the case when the engines have to tackle a rise when practically cold. Plans had been prepared,' the money for the work placed on the estimates for the year, when the following letter was received (in answer to one forwarded to the Government last February), the Tather curious wording of which has been interpreted to mean that the Government objects to a portion of the Town Belt .being so used. "The letter which was further considered by the by-laws committee of the City Council yesterday, reads as follows:— ' "With reference to your letter" of February 16 last I am directed by the Minister of Public Works to state that the proposal to take portion of the Wellington Town Belt for the purpose of the above Fire Brigade site has been carefully considered by Cabinet, but it is not proposed to proceed further in the taking of this land.—(Sid.) W. S. SlloTt," Aoting-Undcr-Secretary." As the result of its deliberations, the committee intends to interview the Minister of Public Works on the point at 10.30 a.m. to-day.
