TROOPS ON PARADE

FOURTEENTH MOUNTBDS MARCH THROUGH THE CITY. Heralded by tlio Trumpet Band from Featherston Camp, the men of tho Fourteenth Mounleds marched through some of the principal streets of tho City yesterday afternoon. The appearance of the troops in town was somewhat unexpected, and Sonsiderable curiosity was displayed as to who they were and why the march. People turned out in goodly numbers to see the paTade as it passed along, and beforo Buckle Street Barracks was reached a good many thousands had witnessed it. The men were of very fine stamp, and looked, to bo iu particularly good physical condition. They bore ample evidences of long, hard, and judicious training. Fitness was the most striking thing about these smart and capable-lookinpr troopers. Tho men were considerably abovo tho average in height, and looked a naturally strong and tough lot. On appearances ono would say that the great majority of tliem come from the country districts. It might bo thought that 'this would certainly be tho case with all the mounted drafts, but it is not necessarily so, as a surprising number of townsmen have, from tho beginning of the recruiting campaign, elected to join the mounteds. This is rather unaccountablo, but it seems that.the lovo of man's good friend, tho horse, is strong even in those whose opportunities for horsemanship are limited. The men on parado -yesterday were under the: charge of Lieut. Dickson. The Featherston Trumpet Band, under Trumpeter-Major Chegw'in, provided capital marching music, and its' playing took the fancy of the public.
