GERMAN DOCTOR'S DINNER
AUCKLAND HOTEL INCIDENT.; A report by Captain Hocking in connection with the incident arisiiig out of tho recent visit of a German prisoner of" war und his guard to an Auckland hotel was read in tho House yesterday by tho. Minister of Defence. Captain Hockiiig stated: "I took ohavgo of Dr. Zeischank at noon on June 11). I was instructed to show him every courtesy. I then took lum to my usual placo for luncheon (Albert Hotel). . I informed tiie proprietor (Mr. S. Garland) of the nationality of my companion, and islced for a private table, which was supplied. Tho doctor and I lunched together, and then wont to the Queen's Wharf, cleared some haggago from tho Customs, and checked it through to Wei. lingtou. The doctor desiring to purchase some thicker underclothing, wo then wont to Mossi's. Milno and Choyco, where Jio purchased what lie required, and afterwards wont direct to my tent at Mt. Eden Guard by tram. About 5 p.m. we walked down again to tho Albert Hotel, arriving about 5.20 p.m. The dootor then asked if ho could have o bath, ajid this was arranged for him. About 5.50 p.m. Mr. Garland informed us ol unrest amongst his staff' owing to (ho doctor's presence in tho hotel. I said I had no desire to cause trouble, and asked for a private room. As this was rot available, Mr. Garland made arrangements for us to dine at the Royal Hotel, which wo did. After dinner wo went to the Globe Picture®, and there remained until it'was timo to go to the train, where tho doctor was handed over to SergtMajor Mead. Throughout tho wholo period tho doctor nover, to my knowledge, did anything which a gentleman should not." .The Minister said that a great many newspapor articles must bo taken with a certain amount of doubt.-' Dr. Zeischank had recently arrived in Samoa with instructions from the Imperial' Government to be repatriated under tho system oC exchange.
