A Press Association message from Sydney states that Archdeacon Boyce has resigned the leadership of the State Temperance Party.

.The death occurred on Sunday of Mr. W. E. Sims, district ncoouiitant at'iho Nelson Chief Post Office, aged 47. Tho deceased joined the postal service at A)«v roa, and afterwards was at Christchurch, Lyttelton, Napier, and Blenheim. He leaves a widow, but no family.

. Amongst those who enlisted in Christcliurch on Saturday was Mr. Eric T. Harper, who is the son of Mi". George Harper, president of the Citizen's Defence Corps. Mr. Uric Harper a few years ago was prominent as a representative footballer, and as one of the famous "All Black" combination which in J905-00 ■ toured Great Britain he achieved distinction as'a scoring three-quarter. Ho ■is at present a member of the firm of Messrs. Harper, Son, and Pascoe, solicitors, of Christchurch.

Mr. Or. Ivirton, of Feilding, is seriously ill. ■

, Advice has been received that Private ■Walter Stevfart, son of Mr. D. Stewart, of Nelson, was tilled in fiction in France on June 12. He was in Auckland at the outbreak of the war, and member of the Force which occu- , pied Samoa. Returning to Auckland, he proceeded to Australia, and again enj ist'ed for active service. He was thirtyfour years of age, and a single man.

Mr. • .Tolin • Gibson, one of ths ; oldest commercial travellers on the. road, died in Dunedin a few days ago 'after a somewhat lengthy illness.

. The death occured at Parkvale on JSatiirdav of Mr. Edward Denize, son of tho late 'Mr. T. Denlree, of Yarlejy Somerset, England, at tho ago of 48 years. Deceased was a brother of Mr. W. J. Denbee, of Parkvale. ,
