_ In the opinion of Mr. T. Horton, the judge of tue fruit exhibited at the Palruerston Winter Show, the collection of tipples displayed this year was the best ever seen in the Dominion. Previously the apples shown appeared of good quality to the ca9ual observer, tat the trained eye of the expert found blemishes. This year's exhibits wero remarkably free from blemish, both in the fruit for export and local consumption, and, i generally, the quality is excellent. A. great expansion in tlie display of frnit is possiblo in coming years. The judge suggested district competitions being held on the lines of tlie Dominion apple show recently held at Wellington. He also considered that it would be advisable to have a separate collection of fruit for export. "The Plimmer's Steps Private Hotel" is tho name of a structure to be erected by a private company on Plimmer's Steps, immediately opposite The dominion Office. The new building, .tho plans of which liavo been prepared by Messrs. Swan and Swan, architects will be a brick structure of three stories, with a frontage of 70ft. to Plimmer's Steps. It will contain a large, well-lighted dining room, capable of seating 100 people, a largo billiard room, smoking and sitting rooms, and forty-four Tooms (on the first and second floors). The building will lia'Ve a splendid fire escape system, and a flat roof finished in Neuchatel asphalt.
