INFLUENZA IN HORSES

HOW TO TREAT IT. This suddenly-occurring complaint, says Mr. 12. L. Siddall, M.R.C.V.S., in the "Agricultural Journal," dealing with influenza in horses! is often noticed after wet seasons, and 'is always accompanied by great weakness. The symptoms are indicated by the suddenness ol the attack, together with great weakness and depression, and a high fever noticed at the very commencement of the attack. There is, as a rule, swelling of the eyelids and a profuse discharge of tears. The patient generally has a cough, and this is usually accompanied by some soreness of the throat; in some cases there is difficulty in breathing. As treatment, diet, should at first be laxative aud cooling, but as soon as the animal begins to recover every attention must he paid to keeping up its,,strength. Three times daily give the following drench: Carbonate of ammonia, 2 drams; nitre, 1 dram; cold gruel, 1 pint. This is to be continued for three or four days, or until the symptoms become lessened. Tf owing to the soreness of the ihroat the drench cannot be administered, give an electuary made by mixing up 2 drams of chlorate of potash and 1 dram of nil re with linseed-meal and treacle, and smear on the tongue twice daily. Relief is sometimes given by applying a mixture of flour and mustai'd in equal parts, made into a thin paste with cold water, to the sides of the chest, and covering with newspaper before putting the covoi on the patient. Tt is most essential ■■'ist every precaution be taken to prevent the spread of infection in this complaint, as its dissemination is more than rapid if once; allowed to get the upper hand.
