M&; WILLIAM MOWBRAY.
Mr ' William Mowbray, ex-schoolma*. ter, and a much-respected resident, ,dieg yesterday at his residence at tlie J.owcr TTutt. The deceased gentleman, nho was in his eighty-first year, was born at Lei. cester, England,- where he was educated f/,r a time under Canon Fry,, afterwards Win" to St. Mark's College, Chelsea, for three years. In 18SG he entered the teachbVprofession and taught.for two and a half years in his native city. so engaged he accepted ' ail offer, to master of the Anglican School Sydney Street, Wellington. bv the ship Midlothian in 1859. He conducted the school with great W when it was taken oyer bv the Board of Education lio was retained head, roaster. Subsequently the was known as the Thorndon School. Mr. Mowbvav was an able'teacher,- beloved bv his scholars, many of whom ore now occupyiiur high nositions in I*ew Zealand and Australia.' His retirement took placa in 1892. For over thirtv years the deceased had lucd at the Eiitt and taken a warm interest, in nil matters relating to the wolfarfl of the district. He was very fond ol music For twenty years he was choirr aster of St. Paul's.
