The Hon. J. Allen (Minister of Dafence) arrived in Dunedin by' the first express on Monday. His visit is partly connected with the business of his Department and partly with a view, to securing some mnch-needed Mr. Allen wilt leavo Dunedin for Wellington by this morning's first express.
Mr. James Hislop, Under-Secretary for Internal Affairs, is on a visit to Auckland. . '
Owing to the death of Captain Richard Todd, Director of the Commonwealth and Dominion Line, Ltd., in New Zealand, Mr. 11. W. Corry, tliA director of the company iii Australia, is at present in New Zealand in control of the company's "uusiness. Captain Leo Myers, brother of the Hon. Arthur Myers, left England for the front some six weeks ago as captain in command of a company of 250 men in the GOth Regiment of the King's Eoyal Rifles. Captain Mvers enlisted as a private sixteen months ago, in the 2nd Sportsmen's Battalion (now the 21th Royal Fusiliers) and has worked hard to receive his present rank. . Dr. Morrison was a passenger fromSydney bv_ the Manuka yesterday. Major Pickerill, Captain Hardham, Y.C., and Dr. Talbot are on a visit to Christolmrch. Mr. .T. M. Paterson, H.A., LL.B., of the Tegal firm of Messrs. Hislop, Lang, and Paterson, of Dunedin, is proceeding home by the Remuera. Mr. Paterson intends .joining the Officers' Training. Corps. Captain W. M. Bell, who has been Assistant Camp Adjutant at Trentham for 1 some months, mil succeed Captain C. E, Dovey as adjutant when the latter loaveA for the front. It is understood that Sergeant-Major Luckham, of tho Camp Headquarters Staff, will take Captain Bell's place as assistant adjutant, with' the rank of lieutenant. Messrs. J. Kebball and the Rev. P. H. Potrie have been nominated as candidates for the Education Board, representing tho Hutt-Horowhenua . area, and Messrs. A. W. Hogg and T. Mobs have been nominated as; candidates for the Wairarapa area. . . Mr. Geo.- Frost lias declined nomination for a seat on the Wellington Education Board. Chaplain-Captain, Cjruickshank, who has been at Featlierston for some months, will leavo for the front 1 with the Fourteenth Reinforcements. Chaplain-Cap-tain Roberts, who has returned from Egypt, will go to Featlierston. Mr. Newton King, of New Plymouth, is visiting Palmerston North. The/ Rev. R. Welsh, of Opunake, is to be inducted to the oharge of the Pahiatua Presbyterian Church to-day. The Rev. J. M'Greeor, .of Martinborough, received word on. Monday that his father was seriously ill, and was rapidly sinking. Mr. M'Gregor left for Gore on Monday night.. ■ Mr. Thomas Moore, a pioneer of the Wairarapa district, died at Carterton on Sunday. The late Mr. Moore had helped to make Carterton, and for many years carried oil a storekeeping business. His ■ funeral took place at Clareville on Tuesday afternoon; arid was i very largely attended. As a mark of respect all the business plaoes closed for an hour. Mr. J. B. Paton, who for many years has been an enthusiastic A63ociation foo'Jwll player and governor, and who i 9 leavTng Wellington to engage in farming in Hawke's Bay, was. presented with, a oheque at last night's meeting of the Wellington Football Association. Bruiidell, a well-known member of the Dunedin Builders' Association, a Past Grand Mastfif of the 1.0.0. F., and also well known in sporting circles-as president of the Grange Cricket Club and a member of the Dunedin Bowling Club, died suddenly on Saturday morning. .. , - • Private advice has been received stating that Mr. l Phillip Carrington, son of the Dean of Christchurcli, has gained first-; class' honours in the theological tripos at th© recent examinations at Cambridge. Mr; Carrington was the only student who won this distinction at the examinations.
Mr. A. Wheatley, Acting Town Clerk at New Plymouth, is at present in Wellington. Mr. A. p. Graham, late secretary of the Dunedin Hospital Board, and -who has teen appointed, to a similar position on the Taraiiaki Board, passed through. Wellington yesterday, en route to New Plymouth. .-•
• The death occurred at Christchurch on Monday of Mr. Walter Hannay. .Mr. Hannay entered the service of the Wen Zealand Railway. He was in his 70tli year, and tod lately been in indifierent health, but his death was not expected. He is survived bv a widow, one son, and four daughters.
