THE LEWIS GUN

2nd LIEUTENANTS APPOINTED

The Lewis machine-gun, a number of which are being, discharged from the Athenic for the uso of the troops in training, is the latest type of machine-gun. It weighs 261b., and is capable of firing 700 -rounds per minute, though in actual service about 300 rounds have been found quite sufficient. Machine-gun sections composed of officers, n.c.o.'s, and men of the New Zealand troops were trained in Egypt in the use of the Lewis gun before starting for Franco. . Trials of the new gun will be made at Trentham and Featherston Camps shortly. Non-Coms. Promoted. The Camp ' Commandant at Trentham acknowledges the following, forwarded to the Trentham Military Hospital :—Mr. Thomas Buchanan, Waitara, two.sacks pumpkins; Soldiers' Comforts Guild, Wellington, two cases of apples.

Dance at the Soldiers' Club. In addition to other attractions for the 14th .Reinforcements,-there will.be a dance at • the Soldiers' Club,- Sydney Street, on Thursday evening. The Wellington Fifth Regiment .Band will agairi supply music, which was a feature of'the last.dance. The committee has received word from those in a position to know that leave will bo granted on Thursday, and has accordingly made all arrangements for a bright evening's entertainment at the club. The'president (Mrs. Massey) aud.lhe committee extend a cordial invitation to soldiers in town that night to join in the dancing at' Sydney Street. , .
