Numbers-of-the clergy deplore the,falling rate, and members of the medical profession state that the (Treat female influx to war work is likely to cause a further decline, which is now one-third in Great Britain since 1876. "The Times" says that as long as the ideal of civilisation is the.greatest comfort for the greatest number of living persons, increasing numbers will avoid the burden of parentage. INCREASE IN NEW SOUTH WALES POPULATION. Sydney, June 20. The preliminary annual report of tho Government Statistician shows that, despite the departure of soldiers, the population has increased .30 per cent., while the marriage rate is the highest for fifty years. , (Rec. June 20, 8,45 p.m.) Sydney, Tune 20.' Tho Government Statistician's estimate of the population of New South Wales at December 31 is 1,806,200, an increase for the year of G616. The excess of births over deaths was 33,275, while the birthrate is 2.5 below Che average of the previous five years. Illegitimate births averaged 51 per thousand. Tho death rate is 50 per thousand, slightly above the averi ago for the last ten years,
