NOTES AND COMMENTS
[Br Gmncoe.l .
J+,l VHIIWWiI.I In connection with the winter meeting of the Wellington Racing Club, owners and are reminded that nominations for all events, except the Trial Plate and Selling Race, close at 9 p.m. on Friday next. , The executive of tho Napier Park Racing Club has every reason to be satisfied with ■ acceptances received for the opening doy of tho wi nter meeting, which takes place on Friday, next. Big fields are engaged in all the events, and the races bear a most open appearance. The absenoe of Hsislcayno from the Hack Hurdles would seem to suggest that all is not well with tho Birkenhead gelding. It came as a surprise to find Immensity and Naupata accepted for in the steeplechases, as both-were under a cloud'early this month, but it is pleasing to know that they are right again, as jumpors of promise are not over plentiful this season. Idealism is missing from the Napier Steeplecihase, in which Vascular will represent the Karaniu stables. No fewer than twenty-three horses have been paid up. for in> the Settlers' Hack Handicap, six furlongs.
The steeplechase fences at Trentham are now being erected, in preparation for tlie winter meeting of the Wellington Racing Club. It is stated that there is a likelihood of Kcoya, Immensity, and Bodenham beinj* sont to Sydney for the spring meeting of the Australian Jockey Club. Consequent upon the mildness of the winter, trainers are able to do a bit of work irith< their youngsters, and at the present time the juveniles all over the Domiuion are more forward for tlie time of tho year. than is usually tlie case. Tho Stepniak mare Volodia was mated last spring with San Francisco, but she has slipped her foal. It has been' decided to mate her next season with Kilbroney. Volodia has only had one foal, Marc Antony, who has proved His worth as a stayor, and in sending the mare to Kilbrone.v it is probably hoped that she will produce another foal equal to winning good races over a journey. Eligible, Sasanoff, and Blackall have been nominated for the Caulfield Cup and Jlclbourno Cup, while Bee also figures in both these events. Mr. E. J. Watt headed the list of winning owners in Australia last season, but his horses have performed very unluckily this season. A cablegram from Melbourne mentions that' Mr. F. Armstrong's Sleight-of-Hand has been scratched for all engagements at tho Grand National meeting at Flemington. This is as was anticipated, and A. Shearsby will probably return home immediately with the horses. Royal Alice, who was . successful in the Richmond Cup at Caulfield on Saturday, won the same event last year. Sho is a'* four-year-old mare, by Bobadil from Zeph, and is one of M. P. Whitty's team. The Auckland horseman A. J. M'Flinn is leaving for Melbourne to-day. He is to have the mount on Tim Doolan in the V.R.C. Grand National Steepleohase, to be ruu at Flemington on July 8. The New Zealand-owned Tim Doolan was handicapped at list. 121b. for the Wanda Steeplechase, two miles and three furlongs, decided at Caulfield on Saturday, but as the cablegram ■ makes no mention of him, it is improbable that he was a starter. An Auckland writer states that there is no intention of sending El Gallo to Flemington for the Grand National Hurdles. As the Spalpeen gelding can only get 12st. 71b. in tho Riccarton. Grand National, his owner will probably reserve him for that event. The distance of the Canterbury Jockey Club's Grand National Hurdle Handicap stood at two miles till last year, when it was increased to two mile 3 and a
quarter, while this year there has been a further change, the length of the journey for the race next August being fixed at two miles and a half. L. Traill will, so it is reported, ride Styrax in the Hawkc's Bay Hurdles. From this it would appear that Crown Pearl will bo an absentee from the Hastings fixture. Kooya was an acceptor on both days at the Gisborno meeting, but was not started. If there was anything amiss with the Signalman mare it cannot be sorious, as she has been paid up for at Napier this week.
