THE SITUATION IN THE BALKANS
GREEK PRO-GERMAN SECTION BECOMING OFFENSIVE LIMIT OF PATIENCE REACHED (By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright). (Rec. June 16, 8.15 p.m.) .London, June 15. . The "Daily Chronicle's" Paris correspondent says that the news from Greece is unsatisfactory. M. Skouloudis (the Greek Premier) is not attempting to pre- ' serve a prudent or becoming attitude towards the Entente. The pro-German3 are organising a demonstration, with the assent of tho police, against the Allied ' Legations, with the object not merely of general annoyance, but to obtain an excuse for tho proclamation of martial law, which would, enable tho Venizelists ' to bo persecuted. Offensive films are being shown .at the kinem&s, which arc the product of the German propaganda.' Members of the Government do not .1 trouble to deny their complicity with the enemy: England hau hitherto been reluctant to proceed with positive measures, but patience has .its limits." 'ORGANISED RUFFIANISM OPENLY TOLERATED. (Rec...June 16, 10.5 p.m.) " ' London, Juno 16. Owing to the censorship-at Athens it is impossible to gauge, thesituation. •' Letters, however, show that tho Greek police have permitted disgraceful demon- • stration.' against th» Entente. Hundreds of ruffians, under the Government's • secret police agents, paraded streets, insulting Britishers and Frenchmen, and ; smashing the offices of the pro-Ally newspapers. A review was given in an Athens til eatro depicting ■ drunken Allied soldiers ! flying from the Bulgarians and Germans. The letters show that.the vast majority of the Greeks will welcome any measures the Entente cares to: take against Greece, in order- to rid her of the present Government, .which is utterly 1 regardless 6f the Constitution. ("Times" and Sydney "Sun" Services.) : . London, June 15. - The • "Times's" correspondent at Salonika states that Greek mountain convoys have been observed moving south from Seres. This indicates that a Greek evacuation of : East Macedonia is proceeding, as the result of the Allies' pressure. FIGHTING IN MESOPOTAMIA ACCORDING TO A TURKISH COMMUNIQUE. . ' Amsterdam, June 15. A Turkish communique states that 120 Cossacks who attempted to reach the British wimp at Alichardi, east of Sheik Saad, were attacked by tribesmen, losing ■102 men and all their arms, animals, and baggage. Our volunteers annihilated ttO. British troops in tho Euphrates sector.
