NATIONAL RESERVE

RAILWAY ENGINEERS'UNIT. Tho Wellington Company of the National Reserve, Railway Engineers, held .if! elr company inspection on Ihursdaylast. The 0.C., Captain Dawson, was in charge, and the company was inspected by Major Young and Captain Barciuy, 'Adjutant of. the N.I. Battalion. X'ho parauS state-was 41 of-all ranks. After inspection at tho Railway Drill Hall, tho battalion officers expressed a wish to see the company at work on the riiove, and the'night being clear and fine the company were marched to Waterloo Quay, wnere company dial, under Lieut. Watson, was creditably carried out. On return to the Drill Hall the inspecting officers addressed the company and complimented Captain Dawson and his officers as well as tho. whole company on the excellent parade and drill, and properly singled out Lieut. Watson for special commendation. The officer commanding thanked the, staff officers for their presence and encouragement. After parade the following businesses transacted Officers on duty for JuneJuly: Drill, Lieut. J. Ban-; engineering, Lieut. 0. W. R. Watson; range officer, Sergt. J. Gordon;-orderly sergeant, Sergt. T. Duignan; orderly corporal, Corpl. W. fl. Chitty; onlerly-room sergeant, Sergt. J. H. JLeopard. Appointments by election-. Sergeant-major, E. Wilson; section commanders, Corporals C. 11. Chitty, R. S. Kent, P. Swan, and Wallace; rango and shooting committee, Corpl. Swan, Sappers Or. T. O'Loughlin, and B. A. Baigent; advisory committee, Corporals Chitty and Wallace, and Sappers Batten, .Hudson, and O'Loughlin. The officer commanding announced that the company, were fortunate in securing the services of Lieut. M'Queen, of the New Zealand Enginers' Railway Battalion, who generously undertook the task' of giving instruction to the officers and n.c.o.'s.of. tho .company. .Lieut. .M'Queen is specialty-fitted for such an important position, aiid the, result of his classes and lectures, which happily wereMvell at-, tended, had already been manifest, and a good foundation- 'tiadbeen laid for tho training of'an'efficient engineering unit of the National Reservo. The company have' been granted tho uso of the Railway Engineers' miniature rifle 1 range every 'Friday; "a J first-class rifle had fortunately been obtained, and another was -in view. Shooting' had boon successfully'inaugurated, and the Shooting Committee have in view a match witli the Petone Railway unit. A signalling squad.of eight was selected for special instruction in that branch. Material for bridge building had been supplied by tho Department, ami constructional work under Lieut."
