LOCAL FRUIT AKD A-EGETABLES. Fruit. inspectors of tho Horticulture. Division report as follows'on the condition of locally-grown fruit and vegetables in shops and auction rooms, and the market condition of these for tho month of May:— Auckland.—Right through tho market has been well supplied with dessert fruit, and tiicre has- been a good demand for choice •varieties. About tho middle of tho month, owing to an mlliuc of apples from the Nelsoli district, prices suffered considerably. These apples arrived clean and in good order—isolated lines, especially large grade apples, suffered in transit from looso packing, and on arrival here many cases were only' three-parts full, and the contents were consequently ba'uiy bruised. Small quantities of pears have Keen drawn from cool store to meet demands, and are in prime condition. Potatoes have been very poor, and it 'has been almost impossiblo to get ono" lino free from disease. Average prices are:. —Apples, ohoice dessert ss. to Bs., good. 4s. to 55., cookers, 4s. to ss. 9d.; pears, choice 7s. to 10s.,- good ss. to Bs.; lemons, elfoiOe Ss. to lGs., good 45.; Cape gooseberries, 4£d. to per lb.,- passions, 6s. to 135.; persimmons, 35.; grapes, Is. to'2-s. id.; tomatoes, 2s. Gd. to 9s. . ...Wellington.—All the.',, local mar,tots have been well supplied with apples, •but not of first-grade quality. Growers jna'y iely on tip-top prices 'fpr,: good, quality- apples honestly packed. Pears are not in very'large quantities, and. good prices are ruling. All vegetables in season are well to hand, and some very fine specimens are to bo seen. The prices ruling during the latter end of month are:—Apples, real good desserts, Jonathans, 9s. to 9s. Gd.; a small lino of tomatoes realised 7s; Gd. ■ halfcase; potatoes, JjG 10s. to -C 7; onions, *26 10s. to <£7; cabbages, 9s. to 14s. sack; carrots, 6s. sack; parsnips, 7s. sack; celery, 3s. to 4s. bunch. , Christchurch.—Fruit markets ' have been fairly quiet, excepting pears, very littlo fruit has been handled. Tomatoes are practically finished, and the small consignments coming forward are mostly of poor quality. Vegetables are in failsupply, with good demand, green vegetables in particular are realising good prices. Average prices are:—Apples, best dessert 7s. to 95., others 4s. to Gs., cookers ss. to Gs. Gd. bushel-case; pears, dessert 4s. to Gs., cookers 3s. to 45.; grapes, Is. 3d. to Is. There appears to be ample supplies of each, especially pears, which merchants are finding difficult to quit. Most lines examined are well packed in new cases, and of good quality and friso from disease. Vegetables and potatoes aro in good supply.
