RAILWAYMEN'S WAR BONUS
REASOiV FOR DELAY. The delay in the payment of the promised war bonus to railway servants was the subject of a question addressed to the Minister of 1? ail ways by Mr. T. M. Wilford yesterday. He asked the Minister whether he was yet able to make any statement about the war bonus. The Hon. W. H. Herries: We have no intention of going away from our promiso to the railway servants. The honourable gentleman, and those who know Parliamentary procedure, know that the bonus cannot be paid until, the House votes it, unless \ye do it out of "unauthorised." Cabinet has decided that the amonnt will be paid as soon as : the House votes it. Tnat will be on the passago of the Appropriation Act, and tnen it will date back to April' 1. , Mr. Ell asked about casual men. Recently a number'of casual men had. been discharged from the Railway Service at Addington. Would these men be entitled to a war bonus as from April 1 until the date, of their discharge? Mr. Herries: Yes. I presume that if they were entitled to the bonus unon their retirement the bonus will date back. .
