THE YEAR'S ESTIMATES COST OF WORKS Last evening the Wellington City Council considered the year's estimates in oommittee. Tie preliminary estimates showed an estimated deficit of .£2065 on general account. The preliminary estimated expenditure was _c(;l5!),5l9, and the estimated receipts Jjla7,4sd, and a proposal was submitted by the Mayor to bring the proposed, expenditure do\yn to the estimated receipts, by reducing several of the items of expenditure. The estimated receipts totalled .£158,905, the chief items m which were: lteutfrom reclaimed land, ,£28,890; street widening properties, .£6350; auctioneers' lioenscs, iilObO; building fees, ,£1110; cemetery fees, =£2100; Zoo, ilOOO; Town Hall, M24Q; Government payment Day's Bay, ,£3000; Hutt contributions, .61364; general rate, -£97,290. The principal items of expenditure mentioned were;— Street works, ,£39,715; street oleansing and watering, 4:11,000; refuse collection mid destruction, .£8750; drainage, ,£7300; fire Brigade, reserves, .£6585; forestry, ,£2550; conveniences and bathing slieds, .£1900; active service pay, .£1000; salaries, £9500; miscellaneous, i' 4000; interest on loans, .£18,848; and sitting fund, J24611. ■The district allocations for street works were set out as follow: —City district, •.£21,399; Island Bay district, Ji3s3i; Kelburn district, .£1064; Kilbirnie distriot, £4518 1 Northland district, ,£1590; Ohiro district, .£4379; Koseneath district, i 6964; Wadestown .district, ,£1192; incidental throughout city, .61000; total, 715.
