OVER THE AGE
SHOULD -VOLUNTEERS BE ACCEPTED? : A question l ' was asked in ' the House recently by Mr. J. A. Young suggesting that tlie Government might reasonably accept men oyer '16 years of age who volunteered for service with the Expeditionary Force. . Replying, the -Defence Minister made the following statement:—"The Government have: taken, into. consideration, the fact that a large'number of men. of the age of forty-six, and over who are medically fit for service desire to'volunteer for service, <4nd appreciate their patriotism. The Government have, however, to. take into consideration the fact that the maxi-mum-age laid down for service' in the Now Zealand: Expeditionary Force is •forty-live years, mainly owing -to the fact that, though the Department is anxious to avail itself • of every able-bodied man offering, the'' consideration. 'arises that men over the age'are' not a good investment for the State as regards'their capacity to stand' the rigors of campaign under the present trying' conditions, after the heavy cost of training, equipping, and transporting them to the front in largo numbers is taken into consideration."
