SEVENTEENTH DRAFT STILL

88 SHORT

The latest figures on the state of recruiting available at Defence Headquarters show that the 17th draft, . which went into camp 197 infantry short, is now 88 infantry short of requirements. Auckland and Otago have supplied their full quotas, Wellington is 50 short, and Canterbury 38 short. The two military districts in which -shortages still exist have been asked to send the necessary men to camp when the next draft is called up. The usual infantry quota for a draft is 1816, and ' that_ number, plus 88, makes tho 1901 who have to be found in a couple of weeks' time. Regarding Wellington's shortage of 50, the group that-has the greatest deficit in tho district is' Hawke's Bay, which, is 21 short. Wellington City appears to be in a fairly sound position as regards the next draft. ■ The ordinnry quota of infantry required of the city is 172. An' addition of 40 has been made, bringing the total required a fortnight ,hence up to 212. .Of these, between 190 and 200 have been secured. Crawford, Civil Servant, City. A. W. Cross, plumber, City. F. Monger, steward, City. M. P. Poolj traveller, City. A. Jones, City. W. Sievers, farmer, Makara. V. F. M. Jones, clerk, City. - L. S. Durey, clerk, Thorndon. G. D. Hewitt, exporter, City. ■ On Saturday the following men from the City were sent to Trentham Camp as additional infantry for the 17th Reinforcements—T. A. Colquhoun, P. J. De Sousa, W. Harrison,- C. F. Nielson, and W. J. Wright. D. G. Laurie was sent to Awapum as masseur, and H. B. Martin to Trentham as an ii.c.o. for the 20th Artillery. ■ Thos. Wm. Lockerbie went to Awapnni yesterday as medical orderly.
