'LOCAL CLUB AFFAIRS. Good progress continues to lie made in the Ngaio Club's annual handicap tournament. The best tallies to date are: — Topp, wins, lj losses; Lindsay and Browne, each 5 wins, 2 losses; Banks, •I—2; Wild and Ed. Hicks, each 3—2; Tucker, '3—3; and Carman, 2—2. The unfinished sanies, Tucker and Topp, Tucker and Wild, and Hides and Lindsay, are adjourned at an interesting stage, and will apparently have a bearing on the. prize-list. A very close finish is expected. ' - Tile annual handicap tourney of the Wellington South Club was comnilfncod on Thursday evening, there being twelve competitors. The results o£ the opening round were as follow, each player's classification being shown in parentheses: Pure-lias (.1) won from Thompson (III), Ci. P. Anderson (I) won from A. Clark (11), Harper (II) won from Bland (IV), I'errott (III) wo from Douglas (III), and Haston (IV) won from Laughton (V). The game, Armstrong (II) v. Berry (III), was postponed. Members are looking forward to the first of their annual "homo and home" matches with the Jjgaio Club. The Working Men's Club's annual handicap tourney opens this evening with 18
. entries, including Peake, the 1915 winner, and Featonbjv the . 1914 winner. The contest i'jr the Staples Cup .and. other prizes is expected to produce sours hard-', fought battles. A gratifying feature "of the tourney is the large amount of "now blood." The club's draughts inatcli with the Watersiders is being arranged for ah early date. The details are in the hands of a joint committee—Messrs. Erickson and Burgess representing the club, and Messrs. Bruce and Butler, the W&tersidera. 'The last 'iiia.tch.~was■:played three years ago, when Hie Watersiders defeated the club's team by 16 games to ■1. A most enjoyable contest, seems assured. . The Wellington Chess Club's annual "Pethericlc" tourney will be commenced shortly-. According to indications there will be about 10 or 12 entries. The adjudications on the three unfinished games in the club's recent telegraphic match v. the Canterbury Chess Club are expected (o arrive from Auckland during the present 'week. An. exhaustive examination of the three'" 'positions' luitted for adjudication confirms the opinion that cEo match will have-a very close finish. .
