MAKARA COUNTY COUNCIL
EMPLOYEES' WAGES INCREASED. Tho monthly meeting of the Maknra County Council was held yesterday, Mr. H. J. llonaffhan presiding. . Tho folloiv"ing were also present:—Councillors J. H. Haggerty, A. J. Taylor, J. A. Pyle. S. bryant, and G! Monk. ~ Councillor Bryant reported that he had made an inspection of the proposed works on the Old Ohariu Hoad. ' He also sub mitted an estimate, prepared by tho foreman, showing that 'the cost would bo ,£9S. Councillor Haggarty moved: "That this council contribute ,£3O as its share of the cost of tho works, and that the Johnsonville Town Board be asked to contribute the remainder." . The motion was carried unanimously.
The Hutt Borough Council wrote asking for support in the direction of establishing a toll-gate on the Hutt Eoad. Although councillors were of the opinion that the system of' toll-gates was a "relic of antiquity," the propoaal.should be supported, if for no' other reason than to force upon the authorities tho necessity of easing the financial strain imposed upon local contributing bodies. It was also mentioned that the amount of interest for construction and maintenance of the road amounted to .£IOOO moro this year than previously. The council decided to support tho Hutt Borough Council in the matter. , The roadman and carters in the council's employ wero granted an increase in wages of Is. per da>, such to remain in force during the period of the war., The increase will take effect from June'l2. The 'chairman and Councillors Bryant and Pyle were appointed delegates to attend another conference of local contributing bodies regarding this year's levies mado by the Wellington Hospital and Charitable Aid Board.
