NEW HOURS—HIGHER WAGES. A new award by the Arbitration Court has been tiled in'respect to the Wellington Saudiers' Union., i'he award iises tne weekly hours at iB, work to cease in the city and suburbs at 12 noon on Saturdays, or on other half-holiday, provided for under the factories Act, 1903. Overtime is to be paid for at rate aaid a quarter for the first three hours, and alter tnat and up to midnight rate and a half, after midnight double Tate, which was also fixed for holiday and Sunday work. Any time lost during any week by worker's own fault to be made up before any overtime is to be allowed. Journeymen are to be paid at the rate of Is. id. per hour, and by mutual agreement between employers aid the union piecework may be done at log rates by employees. Apprentices are to be indentured for five years and paid 10s. per week, 15s. 205., 275. 6d., and 85s. in each successive year. The number, of female workers and apprentices were fixed in the proportion of one of each to three journeymen in the saddlery branch; in the machine branch one male or female apprentice to every three journeymen or journey women; and in the harness branch one of either to one journeyman, or two apprentices to three journeymen, and similar proportions to every three additional journeymen employed. In collarmaking, one apprentice to one journeyman, or two to three journeymen; in bridle-making, one apprentice and three female stitchers to two journeymen, or one apprentice and four female stitchers to three journeymen; and a similar proportion of-apprentices is allowed in the bag and trunk-making branch of the business. Where only one apprentice is kept, another may be taken on after the first has served three years.. I'm. provers' wages were fixed at ss. for the first six months, and. for a further period of six months not less than its 10s. Female stitchers or apprentices aro to be paid 7s. lid. per week for the first year'and. 12s. 6d., 17s. Gd., and J!1 ss. for the subsequent years.
